Let me guess, then some guy came up and insulted your manhood, possibly called you “yeller.” So you had a shootout down by the corral, possibly claiming the bounty on him.
How does the decline in popularity of gin relate to that? Did gin become a sissy drink? Or was there some other reason (ie, vodka mixes with more stuff)?
Actually when I saw the thread I thought it was a movie title. It has nothing to do with whether black guys drink white wine or not- it never much occurred to me whether they do or don’t as I assumed they could if they want to and I don’t go to many wine tastings- but because it sounds like a movie or book or sitcom title.
“Tonight on Black Men Drinking White Wine Jerome’s old college flame has a big surprise for him…” or “Tyler Perry’s Black Men Drinking White Wine 2 starring Tyler Perry as everybody and featuring 742 all new hymns by Tyler Perry”.
I’m not aware of any “sissy” connotations with gin. If anything, it’s perhaps a bit old-fashioned, may a little bit more of an old man drink, especially if drunk neat. If there’s a connotation I associate with gin, it’s that it’s the “alcoholic’s drink.” I’m not exactly sure where that impression comes from, but Googling suggests it’s not unique to me.
As for why it went out of style, well, that should be pretty easy to answer if you’ve ever tasted gin. It’s a fairly piney, bitter, herbal drink that takes a bit of getting used to compared with rum, vodka, whiskey, even tequila. It seems to me that American tastes, in general, underwent a period of blandification through the, I dunno, 70s-90s (maybe starting earlier?), and have only been starting to react the other way in the last decade or so.
What I don’t understand is the enormous surge in popularity of high-end vodkas in the last decade or so. (I should add, it seems to me this surge is pretty much over, and has been for a couple of years, but there was a period in the early 2000s where it was all about vodka.) I grew up in a Polish household, with vodka overflowing at every family event, and I still don’t understand the appeal of vodka as anything but a mixer or as a chaser to your pickled herring.
Just because it hasn’t been mentioned yet: what type of bar was this? More upscale, with wine list?
Because if not, I would find this weird because in every bar I’ve ever been to, the brands of red and white wine they serve are the cheapest $9 crap you can get, and they charge more than a well drink for them. IOW, I would think “Why are those dudes drinking Sutter Home?!”
Mainly because they are men. But I guess I perceive black men as generally being even more concerned about being perceived as girly than white men, so the fact that we are talking about black men does add some more strangeness to me.
just got back from happy hour. bought my (black) friend white wine spritzers. must’ve gotten him like, 4. bartender stopped me and asked me what the deal was? i asked her, what was more surprising? the fact that we’re guys, or that he’s black? she said both, but mostly because we’re both guys.
i guess it skews the data because i’m asian, and it would have been more controlled if i were black as well. either way, i’m concluding the more surprising aspect of this scene is gender vs race.
There was this white girl who drove me home from work sometimes. She was from Howard Beach in Queens, New York. She lived among and worked with many, many black people-- me included. She even banged a married black guy from work-- so it wasn’t as if she was isolated and insulated or something.
Anyway, she drove up my predominately black, yet very suburban block on Long Island and some kids were skateboarding.
“Wow! I didn’t know black kids skateboarded! That’s like. . . Wow!”
“Yeah,” says I, “Black kids skateboard and some of them played D&D and a lot of them play lacrosse and they eat mashed potatoes and fried chicken and pizza and ride bikes and. . . you know, we are the same species.”
Thing is, I knew she didn’t mean anything by it, but still-- what the fucking fuck? Three black guys drinking white wine in public-- how bizarre! They must have seen it in some video or something!

I love black pussy but damn beyotch, you makin’ it so difficult.
oh my god I am so sorry! I’m drinking with some friends and showed them this thread. Alex posted that last post as a joke from my bberry without knowing the sensitive nature of this subject matter. Please accept my apologies. I truly appreciate all members of this board and would never disrespect any of you in this way. If I get banned, please don’t think that this was me. Cheers. And enjoy your drink whether it be white wine or not.
You’re right. Black guys, far more so than other races, are all about being men’s men and keeping it real. Throws hands in the air, waves 'em around like I just don’t care
I feel so horrible this morning because of this freakin’ instigating idiot that wrote that from my username. I really should have logged out before handing out my phone, but I didn’t and really regret it. So I want to publicly apologize again. The whole point of all of my previous responses to MeanOldLady were to demonstrate that we should all be past making judgments based on age, and that discussing cultural and demographic drinking habits shouldn’t be perceived as a qualitative call on that race, and that a simple observation of a trend doesn’t automatically imply prejudice or bias.
MeanOldLady: I’ve known for quite some time that our difference of opinion boils down to each of our individual experiences at bars, and our views on just how common white wine drinking is at bars. Truth be told, I would have noticed if the dudes were all Asian, Hispanic, and especially Indian (since that’s what I am) but they just happened to be black. I would have explained myself sooner but felt that it would be giving in to unwarranted implicit accusations. One of my many weaknesses is never backing down from a fight, and thus our back-and-forth continued too long. Ironically, an idiotic post from a f-ing moron posting from my account will bring it to an end, as far as I’m involved in this particular discussion. I will still discuss posts related to the original question, but our tangential “debate” is over as far as I’m concerned. Again, my apologies to both you and Biggirl. As I mentioned to you in the PM, the idiot was attempting to insult MeanOldLady and not Biggirl, not that it really matters but I just feel everyone deserves an exaplanation at this point.
