I think any group of men drinking white wine while out is odd. Black or otherwise. I’ll occasionally drink white wine, but culturally I think it’s been seen as more effeminate than red wine. Wine, if my impressions serve me well, is typically drank in the U.S. by a more affluent group than those who drink macro-brew beers. Maybe they were brothas from the Hamptons?
My gf always gets white wine. There are a few places that have it but we don’t really notice other people getting it. I see red wine as more “cultured,” while white wine is for drinking in larger quantities. It’s demographic probably skews younger too. White chicks with no taste drink white zinfandel.
This. I love wine but the only time I’ll order it at a bar (excluding wine bars) is if it’s at a restaurant and I’m waiting for a table and intend to have wine with dinner. Maybe that was the case. Or they’re on the down low.
white wine is typically a lady’s drink - a white lady’s drink. however in the summertime, especially this particularly scortching summer, i’ve seen a lot of guys start ordering it.
pbr may well be a hipster beer but you’ll also see young 20-something fresh out of college frat guys order pitchers of it. the difference? can = hipster. pitcher = frat guy. you can’t be SEEN drinking pbr if you don’t have the can.
gin and tonic never really went away but it did die down in popularity compared to rum/coke. however it’s making a comeback in a big way.
in the south, so is bourbon/ginger.
redbull vodka’s reputation as a guido drink is spreading and the stigma is growing.
alcoholically speaking, purple drank is prescription-strength cough syrup, 7up, and jolly ranchers. is it really sold at a bar in springfield?
bars don’t serve too much wine usually. a bar in a restaurant might but an establishment whose sole goal is to dispense alcohol, especially during “partying hours” say between 10-2? wine is RARELY served. probably because nobody wants to risk spilling it.
Now we might be getting somewhere–finally! It’s been pretty damn hot this summer, so you might be seeing clusters of men drinking white wine. Makes sense to me.
Culurally, white wine is more effeminate? WTF are you talking about?
I prefer a robust red, but it depends on if I’m eating and the weather. I’ve had a full-bodied red make my seafood dinner taste like I was licking algae off the inside wall of an aquarium. Won’t make that mistake again. If food isn’t an issue, on a humid summer evening, reds can be too robust for my taste, I’d rather something more refreshing like a white wine or a cold pale beer. In winter I’m more likely to pick a red wine or something like whiskey.
Really? You agree that we should all assume that “that all races, sexes and cultures all behave exactly the same as each other and are influenced by the same sources of pop culture.”
Riiiight. So I should have just noticed the 3 groups of 3 men drinking white wine, and somehow *not[/] notice that they were all black. Gotcha.
First of all, I didn’t say anything about a paper bag. I wonder why you consciously (or subconsciously) added that part. :dubious: But to use your example, you admit that if you did see a group of people in business suits drinking malt liquor, you would consider this to be somewhat odd. Would you notice if they were all women? (I’m guessing yes) But based on many responses here, you would have to ignore the fact that they’re all women or else you would clearly be sexist.
Yup, just as women in business suits drinking malt liquor would be noteworthy to you. There’s no difference. If you see a difference, then refer to the 2nd part of my post (the part that you tossed away as being silly)
God, you are slow. I was taking your sarcastic tone into account when I said I was agreeing with you. Of course I recognize that there are racial/cultural norms.
If I saw some young black guys dressed in baggy pants with their boxers exposed, sideways Philly caps and the latest Jordans (or whatever the sneaker du jour is) walk into a honky-tonk cowboy bar, I would notice, and probably be amused. But for you to be like, “I often see black men drinking white wine. Is this some sort of hip hop thing I don’t know about” is silly, and why everyone is laughing at you.
The rest of your post, somehow, gets even dumber, and isn’t worth responding to.
You’ve never encountered this, as a wine drinker? I mean, quite frankly if I encounter a man who prefers wine to beer or hard liquor, and I’m not in Argentina or France or Italy or wherever, part of me automatically tends to think of them as a bit poncey or effeminate. I know it’s wrong, and I would never treat said person any differently because of it, but it seems to me to be a knee-jerk culturally ingrained response. And it goes doubly for white wine. White wine is the quiche of alcoholic beverages.
In the past, I’ve noticed that those drinking white and rose wines have been predominantly female, while both men and women enjoy red wines. I’ve seen plenty of other gender divisions in drink:
Microbrews, stouts, porters: men
Light beers: men and women
Traditional mixed drinks: men
Fruity/novelty mixed drinks: women
Now, this being the SDMB, of course plenty of men will check in and say they can’t get enough white zin, Michelob Ultra and fuzzy navels, while women will protest that they love gin and tonics and Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout.
Anyhow, the sight of three men all drinking white wine, let alone three black men, strikes me as being a bit odd. The only things I can think of is that it’s either an amazing coincidence, a pop culture reference, or a viral marketing campaign.
That’s interesting. I’d definitely notice a woman ordering a scotch at a bar. I’ve logged thousands of hours drinking at bars, but I don’t think I can even recall a time I’ve seen a female order a scotch. Bourbon or Jack, yes, also occasionally enough that I take note. I mean, the fact that you like bourbon is one of the first things, for better or worse, I remember when I see your poster name. It’s unusual enough that I take note. I’ve never been behind the bar, though, so I don’t have quite as complete and impartial view of what a more varied sampling of people might order. I’d be curious what our resident barkeeps would say.
I’m pretty sure that’s a Simpsons joke. Way back in the early days of the show, Homer created a drink made with cough syrup.
That’s how they’re usually drank if someone’s treating the 40 as a single serve container; so it doesn’t seem revealing at all that your post conjured up that image; it did for me anyway.
Now I’m wondering what this reveals a bias against? Black people? People who drink 40s?
With as many different people who visit this board, isn’t it going to be expected that there’s going to be a variety of responses, instead of everyone being exactly alike? Also, three people doing something is an amazing coincidence? I could see that if we were talking 30 or 40 people.
