Of course, on could also make the point that, once you look past skin color, the Wakandan culture is alien to all Americans, black and white. And so you need outsiders to that culture to act as a window for us. In other words, you need to have someone there who can say “You have hoverbikes!?”. Killmonger, of course, was one such outsider, but I don’t think it would have helped the movie for him to be the only one.
I’m not talking about protagonists. Plenty of movies are all-white (or very nearly so), and any individual all-white movie isn’t a problem. It’s the disproportionate number that’s a problem.
Extraordinarily few movies are all-black. Having a small handful of “tentpole” movies each year be all-black wouldn’t be a problem.
FWIW, this middle-age white dude thought the most relatable character in the movie was the teenage scientist. Not that I’m a scientist, but we nerds gotta stick together, and I’m way more scientist than I am fighter pilot/secret spy.
On Dunkirk, I agree it’s wrong-headed to complain there was not enough minority representation, given that they made up a relatively small proportion of that force.
But I also think the “Political correctness gone MAD” articles which followed were, as usual, wrong.
Because there has been a helluva lot of white washing of history, particularly in my home country of Britain: everyone, black and white, has this image of all 20th century wars being fought only by jolly fine chaps with side partings.
I guess the idea of recruiting from the colonies never occurred to anyone…
Back on June 3, I posted about how Black Panther crossed the $699M mark and wondered when/if it would cross $700M domestic.
It looked like it wasn’t going to reach it, esp. when a couple weeks ago it shed even more screens. But then the box office bounced up this weekend for some reason.
According to preliminary numbers from Box Office Mojo it crossed $700M today. The 171st day in theaters. It had Thursday night previews on Feb. 15th.
This weekend numbers are out of line with recent performance so I’m wondering if they are reliable. We’ll see.
The foreign total has barely budged so still in the $646M range.
As a special added “What tha?” bonus: BP is s**till the number one domestic earner for the year! Well ahead of the new Avengers movie which has no chance of passing it. And there are no movies in release or coming out that could beat it until the holiday movie season. So it could retain the No. 1 spot well into December.
All for a movie that was released in February. The formerly traditional “dead” month for movie releases.
The performance of this movie is staggering.
The film has a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. How many negative reviews could you have found?
It wasn’t actually commenting on the movie. It was just looking for innocuous-seeming things to say as camouflage before it dropped its spam bomb. Which has now been defused with extreme prejudice.
Ugh - I should have noticed the time. Noon here is spam o’clock.
Bumped.
