- In many triathalons, it is common to simply write a number on the contestant’s arm. In most of the photos I have seen however, most all the entrants appeared to be white, or lighter-skinned. What do they do for blacks that have dark skin? Just draw on their shirt? Is there any sort of light-colored marker that is as safe to use and that will show up on dark skin?

First, it’s “triathlon” and “triathlete”
Second, the practice you’re referring to is called “body marking” where they do write a person’s race number (and/or other information) on the person’s body with a black marker.
Third, most people referred to as “black” do not have skin the same color as a black marker, and body marking shows up just fine.
