Black Vultures have made it to Central Jersey

The American Black Vulture never use to be seen up here. But it looks like their range has extended north. Coragyps atratus is nowhere near as ugly as their cousins the turkey vulture or turkey buzzard.

Do you think they know something I don’t know?

There have been occasional records in the northeast for years, but they are becoming more common. They are now found sometimes as far north as southern Canada.

I remember my first trip to the Great Smokies around 1971 from Ithaca New York. We were excited when we first began to see Black Vultures around Virginia.

Here in Panama City they are ubiquitous. There are almost always a few soaring over Ancon Hill.

That’s great news!

Leave some spoiled meat for them and they’ll start coming back every year, like the buzzards which return to Hinckley.

I’m hoping to be out of here in the next 2 months so that won’t help me much. But I’ll keep it in mind for the next place.
