Blackadder

I was watching the election night episode of Blackadder the Third and I noticed the joke that when the “Standing at the Back, Dressed Stupidly and Looking Stupid Party” guy is explaining their policies, he DOESN’T qualify that “free corsets for the under-fives” means little girls. Heh Heh Heh.

Blackadder the Third remains my favorite Blackadder. And that’s one of the very best episodes.

“He’s a violent, bigoted, mindless old fool.”
“Sounds a bit over-qualified.”

You know, I’m a big Rik Mayall fan, but I’ve never seen any Blackadder. I should probably ckeck that out.

Mayall’s only in a few episodes (a few scenes, really), but he’s terrific there.

Woof!

That’s a cunning plan.

Is it so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel?

It’s as cunning as a fox that’s earned the Professorship of Cunning at Oxford.

Oh my are you in for a treat, the phrase “force of nature” was invented for Rik’s cameos in Blackadder.

Ahaahahhahhahhha!

I’ll definitely be ckecking, er, checking it out!

Fair warning: the first season is distinctly different from the rest. The first has him as a much more low sniveling backstabbing character. The sniveling is of higher standards in later seasons.

Yeah, I’d recommend skipping the first series and starting with the second.

But then they’d miss Brian Blessed!

And “The Queen of Spain’s Beard”, which is one of the funniest episodes in all of the series. (I’d remembered it as, “The Spanish Infanta’s Beard.” Mandela Effect, I guess.) “Her eyes are as blue…as the Stone of Galveston, my Lord!”

The humor is much coarser in the first series, but it’s still worth your time, IMHO. Besides, it’s not very long.

Well, could watch it at the end as a prequel. Series 2-4 have a settled format, and are classic comedy gold. Series 1 was written by Richard Curtis (with Atkinson), while Ben Elton didn’t join until the second series to form the classic Curtis-Elton Blackadder writing partnership. The character roles are also reversed from the usual format in the first series, with Blackadder as the idiot and Baldrick as the cunning one. Series 1 is like an inchoate Blackadder.

You mean BRIAN BLESSED!!!

I would definitely skip the first season. It’s a completely different show.

Watch series 2-4 in that order. Then if you want more, watch Blackadder: The Cavalier Years, Blackadder’s Christmas Carol and Blackadder Back and Forth, also in that order. Then, if you want to complete your experience, watch series 1.

Well, hurrah with highly polished brass knobs on!

Any idea where I can watch Seasons 2-4 and the specials without paying extra? Amazon Prime only has Season 1 as part of the package.

For reference, I have DirecTV, Amazon Prime, and Netflix (USA version).
