It has so happened that I was accidentally forwarded an email with some… less than appropriate attitudes towards the non-management staff of my company. With literally thousands of employees on email and access to the list of all email addy’s so dopers…what would you do?
File it as a chip in the big game?
Email bomb my company from a new hotmail address?
Blackmail the manager to approve bigger raises for the employees?
What if it wasn’t an accident? Maybe it was a “plant” to see if you would do this. And that all bosses have already been informed of the plan and are waiting for you to dig yourself a deep hole, etc. It’s happened before.
Are you even sure who it originally came from (fully examining the complete path in the header of the message, not just the “From:” field)?
I would show the message to the alleged sender, letting them know that you have no reason to believe that this was necessarily a real message. (OTOH, thus letting them know you have seen its contents, if it is real.) This allows the person to persue the issue of tracking down its origin if it is fake.
Never assume an email came from someone unless it is PGP-signed. And even then, maintain some doubt.
Ftg has valid points. However, you specifically mention non-management staff…is this person acting all superior since he is a manager and therefore a better human being than the grunts?
If so and you can do it without being caught and you are sure it is this person, nail em hard. Send it to everyone and watch him go up in flames. He/she deserves it.
9 times out of 10, you’re best off deleting the e-mail and forgetting about it. See, people who are in management are in a position to harm you without you even knowing the details of what’s happening to you.
