Blacks and the Democratic Party

All I know is this: if I wanted to invite someone to my “home,” I would do as much as possible to make them feel at home. Spin it however you like, but a CNN camerawoman (who happens to be Black) was pelted with peanuts at the GOP convention. That did in fact happen. Now, if I was a GOP leader, I would immediately, vociferously address this. And you wouldn’t even have to say “OMG that’s racist!1!!!” Simply a tersely worded statement that uncivil behavior has no place at the convention. Would it convince me that racism is not a pillar upon which the GOP has built its support? No, but at least I’d see them as being clever enough to try to camouflage that shit.

I’ll also put it to you this way. Many Black people, myself included, regularly interact in environments where we are the only Black person, or we get the feeling we’re being examined for every action we take. So for most professional Black people, I’d say few of us have a problem being in a setting where we are in the numerical minority. But I also think most of us know when we are being welcomed vs. being tolerated.

The GOP has positioned itself as an entity that believes in the “Blacks/Niggers” dichotomy (see the famed sociologist C. Rock on this one). One or two well dressed, well spoken Blacks are fine. But don’t let that number get too big, or have them address issues beyond the narrowly defined “party line.” So a Sowell here, a Rice there is terrific. But what about someone who subscribes to 75% of the “platform,” and isn’t as well spoken?

Regarding your point about Coulter et al not being racist/sexist/homophobic… surely you jest. gamerunknown pretty much disproved that with his quotes, but I sense what you’re saying is that they are deliberately provocative in their rhetoric to get attention. If that’s true, and they in fact do not believe the racist/sexist/homophobic drivel they spout on a fairly frequent basis, that’s even more despicable. Many of their followers are empty-headed and simply uncritically accept their views. Here’s the difference: I can talk to a friend about Rachel Maddow’s commentary and they’ll often say, “I agree with her here, but I think she’s wrong on this point,” but when I’ve engaged Limbaugh listeners (btw, I typically catch his first hour, and I’ve read How Things Ought to Be), usually, there’s an innate need to defend everything he says, uncritically.

I guess, then my point is this: the GOP has a paucity of Blacks, many of whom are extremely poor representatives of the demographic due to obliviousness and stupidity (Herman Cain), obviously over their heads in terms of grasping policy or excellence in their profession (Rod Paige, Clarence Thomas), or “yes men/women” (Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell). The closest they come to intelligent thinkers are hardly known (Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, John McWhorter) and I have to say “intelligent” carefully because I have real problems with the intellect in their arguments, but maybe I’m biased.

Why doesn’t the GOP tackle the issue of race, instead of pretending it doesn’t matter? Newsflash: look at any quality of life indicator in the US, and you’ll see it does. I wouldn’t have a problem with differing views if there was honest engagement on the issue. The GOP in many ways is responsible for creating and/or maintaining the societal structures that serve to oppress people of color, LGBT folks, poor people, and women, and do not take any responsibility to acknowledge this fact, or engage in solutions.

If I was in charge of the GOP I would appoint task forces on these populations - and guess what? - actually invite those who disagree with the party to voice their perspectives, and try to learn why the fear or disdain exists. Maybe it means you build in some new language into the platform, or you acknowledge that not every person that could benefit from GOP leadership subscribes 100% to the entire platform.

Anyway, the GOP is moving toward irrelevance. Here in Texas the fasting growing population are Latinos, and the Dems are working hard to increase GOTV efforts, develop young leaders - look at the Castro twins. What is the GOP doing? Increasing efforts to suppress the Latino votes, and importing Ted Cruz as an exemplar of their diversity. (Nothing wrong with Cruz’s background, but he is purported to be the Great Brown Hope for the GOP in Texas - but he was born in Cuba and raised in Canada. Most Texas Latinos have very little in common with his experience.) So I’m going to watch the GOP disappear into insignificance in the next 20 years, but I know they will not go gently into that good night. More dirty tricks and dog whistle tactics will come, I’m sure, instead of actually listening to what people in these growing communities want and need.

If you want the GOP to grow, drop the culture war bullshit. Leave LGBT people alone and stop worrying about what they do in the privacy of their homes. Accept that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land. Stop trying to Christian-ize every damn thing, and accept the fact that there are plenty of atheists, Muslims, and everything else that like to make money. Drum idiots like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann out of the party, or designate them with the fringe membership that they deserve. Actually take a stand against racism. That will at least give you a chance for people to take you seriously.

And Stacey Dash gets death threats? Seriously? I’m sure she’s scared to leave her house now.

John McWhorter? Wikipedia says he is a liberal democrat, though with unspecifiedly dissenting views on “civil rights orthodoxy.” But he supports Obama and gay marriage, and calls himself a Democrat, so I’m not sure it’s right to lump him in with clear cases of GOP blacks like Rice, Powell and McCain.

Shelby Steele also endorsed Obama IIRC.

Moreover putting Steele, McWhorter, and Sowell all in the same category is asinine.

About the only thing they have in common is that they’re black and they don’t like Affirmative Action and they’re black.

And they don’t like affirmative action.

I freely admit I don’t know Steele’s work intensely, but I know McWhorter’s work quite well, and I’ve met and talked to him. Did he have an epiphany or something?

Out of curiosity, did you consider the death threats against the Dixie Chicks* for dissing George W. Bush to demonstrate an equally ridiculous state of conservative agitation back then?
*From Wikipedia: “…some general death threats led them to install metal detectors at the shows… The degree of hatred directed toward the Chicks included a specific death threat against Maines in Dallas that led to a police escort to the July 6 show and from the show directly to the airport.”

He supported Obama. Still does as far as I know. Like Andrew Sullivan, self-described conservative who’s been behind Obama from the start.

I don’t know, I’m just telling you what it says on Wikipedia. The only work of his I’m familiar with is his work in Linguistics.

What did he say when you talked to him?

Well, I can’t ask for more than than that, I guess. Thanks for the answer. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I could and do disagree with a fair number of your points but I can see that it would get nowhere. Again, thanks for the response.

Could you try applying this dictum more generally? Thanks so much.

Oh, since I didn’t speak to the death threats: I think they have absolutely no place in civilised society and appeals to violence do not vindicate any political position.

Well, I never said that the Republican party had a monopoly on racism, thats just where they make you feel at home.

Indeed.

Tell me again how it’s not about race.

Also, more dog whistling:
"Wisconsin GOP Senate candidate Tommy Thompson’s son delivered some head-turning thoughts on the presidential election Sunday morning.

"In a clip posted on YouTube from a Republican Party Of Kenosha County brunch event, Jason Thompson commented that “we have the opportunity” to send President Barack Obama “back to Chicago – or Kenya,” drawing applause from the crowd.

“Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus was among the other speakers, adding that “we have an opportunity to save America” by electing Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.”
Yep, they’re gonna “save” America from the black man from Kenya.

And you aren’t offended and outraged, OMG?

You don’t think Priebus’ comment was intended to address Obama’s big government, socialistic governing ambitions rather than the color of his skin?

Republicans want to thwart Obama for the same reason they’ve wanted to thwart Democrats for decades: we don’t want a nanny-state government controlling our lives and telling us that “there comes a point when, uh, you’ve made enough money” so it can buy the votes of have-nots by promising to take money away from the nation’s earners and give it to them.

And before you leap into yet another accusation of dog-whistling based on the claim that blacks, largely being have-nots, are the primary “victims” of this so-called selfish and racist attitude, may I remind you that not only do whites represent the largest number of people receiving government financial assistance, but virtually half the nation’s earners - again being mostly white - currently pay no federal income taxes at all.

This is the state of affairs eighty years of Democratic social engineering has brought us to, kicked into high gear mostly since the Johnson administration and receiving its greatest boost since then by Obama (or rather by the Democratic congress serving at the same time as Obama, who pretty much stood by on the sidelines and made it known he’d approve whatever clusterfuck Congress came up with, which of course he did).

So yeah, we think America needs to be saved. But we also thought it needed to be saved from Johnson; most especially from Carter; from Clinton and his would be co-president Hillary; and now from the most openly socialistic president of my lifetime, Barack Obama. Believe me, the fact that he is from Kenya plays absolutely no role in most Republicans minds in thinking America needs to be saved from Obama.

Well, the color of his skin is a thing that exists.

Priebus was part of the audience when Jason Thompson said they would send Obama back to Kenya, then got up and said our country needed to be saved [implied: from this Kenyan interloper who doesn’t have American values (something that’s actually been said by Republican mouthpieces and elected representatives numerous enough times that we get it even when it’s unspoken)].

John McCain slapped back when some dumbshit stood up and claimed Obama was a Muslim. Priebus is the leader of that party and not only doesn’t disavow that ugly racist crack, but he affirms it with his participation in events where those dog whistles are blown.

Hilarious that you’ve been fighting a non-existent boogey man for decades, but you want us to put you guys in control. It’s despicable to refer to hard-working Americans who aren’t being paid their fair share of the profits their work generates as “takers,” or to accuse the party that’s fighting for workers’ rights of wanting to “give” them something when we what we’re advocating for is that they get what they’ve earned. And even more utterly absurd that the party who literally wants to dictate who we can have sex with without being sent to prison, or who we can legally commit our lives to, or what we can do with our bodies when they’re at risk of serious complications up to and including death if we get pregnant and don’t wish to be, is considered by people like you to be the anti-nanny-state party. It is to LAUGH MY ASS OFF.

“Yet another accusation” based on that claim? Bullshit. I’ve never made that claim anywhere. Ever. But you wish I had because that’s the only way you can argue against it, since it’s a damn straight up lie.

Here’s who pays no federal income taxes:

Active Duty Military.
Retired Seniors living on Social Security income.
The working poor.
Jobless individuals.
Millionaires and billionaires.

Do you see “Black people” anywhere on that list? No you don’t. Because not a soul ever made such an absurd remark, so knock off the non-existent straw men, it’s really offensive.

Social engineering? You did not just say that, did you? This will be my last reply to you ever for that crack alone. Shame on you and your disgusting insensitivity.

That “fact” that he is from Kenya? Are you shitting me right now?

And you have the gall to object to us calling you and your ilk racists? How dare you?

As for your ridiculously absurd “socialist” label, you clearly have no clue what that even means. And if you gave an honest damn about any of the policy positions you claim to stand for, you’d be a Democrat because the economy has historically done better under Democrats for the past 80 years than it has under any Republican; Republican tax policies cost this country $280 BILLION a year in lost revenue from offshore accounts; the entire budget deficit lies squarely at the feet of irresponsible Republican fiscal policies; Democrats deliver on “smaller government”; Democrats are far superior on engendering personal responsibility; The stock market soars when Democrats are in control; and if you want less government intrusion into your personal life there’s no way you’d be voting for Republicans; and Democrats are head and shoulders better at curtailing government spending, particularly President Obama.

So take your racist apologist crap somewhere else. No one’s interested in it here.

Calling Obama a socialist is buying a ticket to crazy town.

I don’t believe you at all. There is way much evidence against your claim.

Wow. I don’t recall Starving Artist more directly saying that he was a Birther before. I seem to remember him usually dancing about the issue. Glad to see that he’s actually flat out stating what he thinks now; it will make it a lot easier to approach his arguments knowing where they’re coming from.

Not that it changes anything, I’m sure he meant “my opinion” rather than “fact”. He has a long history of confusing the two.

So is his haircut. The point is it’s his policies and ambitions that the vast, vast majority of Republicans want to save America from, not his skin.

Given the fact that Republicans are responsible for the first female Supreme Court justice, the first black female National Security Advisor/Secretary of State, and the first Hispanic Attorney General, I wouldn’t be surprised if the first president with two black parents turns out to be Republican as well.

Oh, please. I’ve said on this very board that I don’t believe there’s any question that Obama was born in Hawaii. I may have been a little careless with my phasing but what I meant was that the fact someone may have said he was from Kenya was of no consequence in Republicans wanting to save the country from having him in the White House.
