So now the Republican vote didn’t count? That is beyond lame because it ignores the failure of the party you’re trying to defend. If you want to get the record straight then you have to go with the ACTUAL RECORD. Either LBJ was too busy to twist some arms or Democrats were too racist to actually vote for the rights of black people. That is the reality of it.

Isn’t the board suppose to be about fighting ignorance? The Republican party has been there since the end of the civil war.

Go back and read my post. Not only did the GOP nominate one of the few Republican senators who voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 2/3 of the delegates (you know, the party faithful, the rank and file) voted against a plank in their party platform affirming the Act.

Do you really want to know where the Republicans have been? Let’s start with this from their party platform from 1948.

Lynching or any other form of mob violence anywhere is a disgrace to any civilized state, and we favor the prompt enactment of legislation to end this infamy.

One of the basic principles of this Republic is the equality of all individuals in their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This principle is enunciated in the Declaration of Independence and embodied in the Constitution of the United States; it was vindicated on the field of battle and became the cornerstone of this Republic. This right of equal opportunity to work and to advance in life should never be limited in any individual because of race, religion, color, or country of origin. We favor the enactment and just enforcement of such Federal legislation as may be necessary to maintain this right at all times in every part of this Republic.

We favor the abolition of the poll tax as a requisite to voting.

We are opposed to the idea of racial segregation in the armed services.

Noble, honorable and progressive.

Now let’s compare the party platform of 1968.

In many areas poverty and its attendant ills afflict large numbers of Americans. Distrust and fear plague us all. Our inner cities teem with poor, crowded in slums. Many rural areas are run down and barren of challenge or opportunity. Minorities among us—particularly the black community, the Mexican-American, the American Indian—suffer disproportionately.

1968 was the year Martin Luther King was murdered. And those two sentences right there were all the Republican Party had to say about race.

Those two sentences in the Republican platform were all the party had to say about one of the two most defining issues of the postwar era (the other was the Cold War.)

Interested in what the Democrats had to say in their platform?

If you were black, who would you think would be more committed to your interests?

If you want to keep arguing that blacks were mistaken in turning away from the Republican party, you’re going to have to convince us that today’s Republican party is closer to its 1948 ideals than its 1968 lip service.

Susanann, “the past 150 years” includes the last 50 years, during which period the GOP actively disenfranchised blacks and attempted to reinvigorate/reinvent the practice of institutionalized racial discrimination, but I’m sure you already knew that.

I am not a Republican, but, for starters,

the Republicans were primarily and mostly responsible for:

lower taxes for blacks,

Deregulated the airlines resulting in lower airfares,

the Republicans passed laws giving the right for blacks to carry concealed weapons for self defense in 38 states,

started building a fence to keep out foreign illegal aliens and make blacks more safe and secure,

Thanks to Republican Sarah Palin every black in Alaska gets a check for over $1500.00 a year from the oil that is taken out of Alaska,

REpublicans were mostly responsible for continued advances in our space program, space shuttle, etc yielding better satellite phone communications, better GPS, giving us more knowlege about the universe, etc.

If you want to go all the way back to 35 years ago, then Republican Richard Nixon ended the Vietnam war and stopped the dying of American black soldiers in Vietnam

It seems you’re being willfully obtuse to an end I can’t fathom. Whether one likes it or not, although not all Republicans are racist, it’s no secret the GOP is the party where racists feel most at home. The party, to this very day, uses anti black and anti hispanic rhetoric to its political advantage. Knowing this, why would a black or hispanic person with any self respect belong to such an organization?

Don’t get me going on this bit of crazy. Gays are the one group it is still okay to openly and legally discriminate against, which the GOP does with seemingly great fervor and glee. Now that’s ignorant above and beyond the call of duty. The Alaska Permanent Resident Fund was created in 1976 (what was Sarah doing then?), and in effect represents a tax on all non-resident users of North Slope that goes right into the pockets of Alaskans. What’s black about that - the color of crude?

Thank you, Almighty Father, for the GOP. Through them, you have allowed me to capture the white woman I’ve always wanted. Through them, you have allowed her to find her to way to me via airline-installed GPS. If you object to the David Dukes of the world, how do you think Republicans view a party that explicitly promotes a racial political apartheid? 43 members of Congress openly segregate themselves in a political caucus that excludes other races in an effort to promote their agenda.

I don’t think you understand what apartheid means. Either that or you are using apartheid to describe teh congressional black caucus in the same way that some folks use Ponzi scheme to describe social security.

I have my issues with a congressional black caucus that won’t admit non-black members who support issues that are important to the black community but its not apartheid?
