Who is “she?” The person Reagan was talking about never existed.
There there, Diogenes - there, there.

And that was not an answer. A mental image was asked for, not a description of traits.
It’s not like he’s going to admit it, but I cann vouch for the fact that in the deep south during the Reagan years, welfare recipents were characterized as all but universally black, and (even more significantly, and this plays into the current scapegoating of illegal immigration as well), black people were all assumed to be on welfare (just like all Hispanics are assumed to be “illegals”).
Not that you’ve got the smug out of your system, how about an honest answer?
So I am a less visual thinker than you like. Get over it.

Shodan
Magiver, in an effort to score points, you’ve blown right by my point entirely. Are you trying to understand why black people don’t vote GOP, or are you trying to win a debate on a message board? Let’s go about it in reverse. OK, assuming you’re a black voter, to which position do you think you’re going respond favorably?
a. You’re touchy, and a lot of you are morally deficient and or criminal, you’re mistaken in your belief that the GOP is catering to racism. We just have policy disagreements. That some of those policy disagreements were discussed in ways that seemed to demonize and scapegoat black people were due entirely to your moral failings. (to be fair this seems to be Shodan’s position)
b. You’re touchy and stupid, you’ve been misled by the evil Democrats who’ve twisted 40 years worth of mere policy disagreements (and tons and tons of easily misconstrued statements), into claims of racism.
c. You’re touchy sheep. One phone call to a MLK and you’ve abandoned your
rightul home in the GOP. Please ignore the last 40 years of inuendo and slurs, err, I mean policy disagreements and easily misconstrued statements.
Now, maybe it’s me, but none of those positions are screaming VOTE GOP.
Back on topic, many blacks stay away from the Republican party because they treat us like idiots who vote based on skin color and hip hop. Take the party’s election of Mike Steele as head. The party is in shambles after taking a drubbing over two elections. America just elected a black president. What does the GOP do? They think, “Crap! We need to reach out to the youth and minorities. Put in the first black man we can find!” Then they elect a bumbling idiot who has no business running a party. And what is his first step? Talking like a black man from the suburbs trying to scam inner city blacks by talking like white grandmas do when they want to seem ironic. How dumb do they think we are?
Magiver - I understand that you are not racist. And I get that you would not like to be part of a party that has used racism to garner votes. But, as uncomfortable as it is, the facts show this is exactly what the GOP has done. Please see posts #81 and #86. Black people understand this, and it is why you will not see much support for the party in the black community for a while.
It’s not that they think you’re dumb. It’s that they don’t care because you don’t vote. Michael Steele was a direct response to Obama - not Obama the black President, but Obama the guy who increased voter turnout among African-Americans.
It apparently did not signify that Obama (and/or the failures of the prior administration) increased voter turnout among practically all groups.
The only reason they appointed Michael Steele was because of his skin color. That was transparent.
The repubs have pandered to the bigots and racists for generations. They would be kidding themselves if they think blacks will forgive and forget easily. Like Phil Ochs said" some of the best negroes are our friends". They trot out Steele and a couple others and declare they are not anti-black . But these guys are not acting in the interests of the blacks. They are seen as traitors.
I don’t think his skin color is really transparent, and I’m sure I’d be squicked out if it were.
Straight lines, straight lines …
We know your answer to the question now anyway, do you realize that?
… As far as my response to the thread it was a sidetrack to the initial point and was directed at the “racist Republican” soundbite which I feel is grossly undeserved. The GOP has done it’s part to make things fair. If you study history the Democratic party was NOT supported by black people. The support that JFK got from MLK and the SCLC was the result of a politically astute move on his part and not his record. LBJ may have been the real deal and deserves party leadership credit but so should the majority of the Republican party who did the heavy lifting to back him up.
What happened after LBJ was a jelling of a voting block which in this case was black voters. Money was spent to maintain that vote in a way I think was detrimental but that is something for another thread.
Magiver, like others here have said, you seem like a decent sort, I don’t personally think you’re a racist. But your what you seem incapable of understanding is that you although you think it’s undeserved, that’s due to your perception. I purposefully left out part of my post because I wanted to see how you’d respond to the dog whistle. Did you hear it?
The GOP has always been there with the votes. I don’t know what else to say. We were there when Democrats were selling dreams with a phone call. Phone calls are nice but it’s the vote that counts.
Did you hear the dog whistle?
I don’t know what you’re trying to convey. Honestly, I don’t really care. I’m not going to sit silent while the GOP is slandered by a party that gave less support for civil rights laws. Any attempt to reinvent the voting record falls on deaf ears.
While engaging in this thread a poster quite clearly engaged in the precise behavior we’re telling you occurs all the time by republicans in leadership positions, and those just running for office. . There was a dog whistle; it occurred in this thread, did you hear it?
