Sounds like a waste of time for the Ohio legislature. Whether they ratified it or not, the Amendment was in full force in OH.

Not a waste of time, at all. It kept them from passing any really stupid laws for about 15 minutes.

Michiganders actually went to WAR with Ohio, back in the day. I’m not talking about football rivalries; I’m talking legitimate scrapping and ass-kicking over disputed territory. Heh.

I think they ended up with Toledo after all.

Ohio “won” by keeping Toledo and the mouth of the Maumee. Michigan was given the “consolation prize” of the “worthless” Upper Peninsula–just before some of the richest deposits on earth of copper and iron were discovered, there.

No need to worry. We are combining the 50th for the statehood with the blow-out celebration of the 100 Anniversary of First Flight by Ohioans. You wannabee Tarheels are welcome to attend. We don’t bite.

Ohio’s dubious distinctions, including this:

In 1835, Ohio and Michigan duked it out over what is now Toledo. Each state sent militia to the battleground, but no shots were fired. (Mainly because both sides got lost in the swamp.) The dispute ended when Michigan applied for statehood.

The deal: Michigan got the Upper Peninsula for letting Ohio have Toledo. And Ohio considered that a victory.

A couple of years ago, a small town in the Dutch province of Zeeland found out something rather disconcerting. Seems that 350 years ago, when they still held city rights and were an autonomous mini-state if you will, they negelected to co-sign the peace treaty with Spain. So, they were technically still at war. The Spanish ambassador to the Netherlands was called in, and asked to sign a treaty of peace with the village. He agreed, and had the class to show up in a full 17th century Spanish Armada uniform.

Say, Coldfire, I’d really like to see the Spanish ambassador en regalia. Googling Zeeland “Spanish ambassador” treaty didn’t help.

I couldn’t find anything either, Hoops, when I looked for it yesterday. It was one of those mini-articles in a Dutch paper a few years ago. I doubt it got a lot of serious press, least of all from abroad.
