Blade Runner 2049: Seen it (Open Spoilers after the first post)

You and I sure think alike! All three of these resonate with me. Although in the first case, maybe a little less strongly than you put it. The original film is an A+ for me, one of my all time favorites, but BR2049 is still an A, and my second-favorite film of 2017. I definitely think Deakins finally got his Oscar for an excellent submission.

The curse of every sequel except for "Godfather II ". I enjoyed the second one an awful lot as well. I felt as though this Director took the entire framework of the first one and aged it out a few decades- as is presented as the reality in this film- and made it his own. It didn’t feel exactly like “BladeRunner”, and I’m kind of grateful for that. There is enough connective technology and subtle links anyway. The bit with the rain and the immersion in the population of L.A. ? Very good point, a subtle point. I wonder if we are supposed to feel that in some ways the city is slowly emptying. Or dying off. Or getting themselves off-world more and more. One aspect of emotional connection that is sometimes overlooked in this kind of discussion is sound. If you were to cut together a few of the similar looking sequences from the first film and then a couple of the street sequences from the second, you might find ( and I don’t have the second one on hand, but I watched the first one just before seeing the second on a few months ago ) that there is a more immersive aural sense to the first film in the exteriors. AND a more engaged sense of lonely space in the large interiors. It makes a difference. Perhaps you’re feeling less connected not only because the lack of claustrophobic crowding in the shots, but in the difference in sound.

Interesting. They shot a different actress and then, using rather advanced C.G.I. techniques, mapped old footage of Sean Young’s face and created a computer 3D model of her then, and applied it over the actress in the scene. As a working cinematographer who is 55, while I appreciate the 1’s and 0’s that go into this technique, it leaves me dry.

At any rate, here is the behind the scenes footage and information showing how the sequence was accomplished.

Nice! I missed that. Definitely want to watch it again sometime.

Watching it now, very late to the party. Have about 40 minutes left.

Wow, this is excellent. Much better than the original, which I have admired somewhat, but never really enjoyed.

I think this movie makes that movie feel like the prequel no one asked for. This is the one that I’ll remember a lot better.

So impressed. Sometimes going back to something older is worth it.

Finished it.

Excuse me. I must’ve been cutting onions or gotten something in my eye. :sniff:

That was** AMAZING**. This wasn’t nominated for Best Picture?

I don’t even like Blade Runner that much and this one is an all-time great science fiction movie. Wow, I’m totally impressed.

I loved this movie.

I adored it too. Sad that it wasn’t a big hit, but maybe it’s best if it’s left alone without a sequel made for cash reasons.

I do not want another one. I think this one was enough for me.

Shame it didn’t do better.

I thought it was the second-best film of 2017 (after “Loving Vincent”), but not better than the original!

I think that it was a great addition to the original, and I have always preferred Blade Runner to StarWars (which I get flak for, and will forever).

But after watching it a few times (Best on 4K UHD, streaming doesn’t do it justice) I am starting to dig into the deeper themes. Just like the original I think it will grow in popularity over the years.

I do think that a bit more publicity on the three mini-movies explaining what happened between the movies would have helped a lot, the darkness and lower population due to the post blackout starvation and the rise of power by Wallace and the worsened conditions for citizens despite advances in technology is a bit lost. As an example above people were looking for the liveliness in the streets of the original, but the 3rd pre-mini movie explained how the earth was dying off.

I doubt it will be made, but if you notice the disobedience by Luv and K, I think they did set it up for a sequel based on a replicant uprising but as the box office was similar to the original I doubt it will be made. The Wallace story seems be set up to show how his hubris was going to result in failure and that the slaves would rise up.

Maybe they can make another mini-movie or comic book to wrap it up.

Bringing this thread back because I finally saw the movie (twice). I just have a couple questions about some minor details.

  1. It was snowing outside of Ana’s house/office. Was it supposed to be somewhere in LA area, it the mountains just outside of town, or someplace else further north?

  2. When K and Deckard meet, they exchange lines from Treasure Island. I automatically assumed they were at the Treasure Island casino. Is this correct?

Scratch question #1. I saw the movie again and Ana’s house was in LA somewhere in the hills. (I’d also forgot it was snowing in the rest of the city.)
