Blake Shelton's Hell Right. Is it considered Hillbilly Rap?

I’m seeing a lot of praise for Blake’s newest hit.

Certainly the video helps sell the song. The video is bad ass.

I kind of like it, and also slightly dislike the extremely repetitive lyrics. It’s not the best written song that I’ve heard. Hell Right, Hell Right, Hell Right

Is it considered *Hillbilly Rap? I’m undecided. Words can be spoken without it being Rap.

I much prefer Blake’s last hit God’s Country where he actually sings.

Hell Right

*IIRC Garth Brooks coined the phrase hillbilly rap

btw, it’s the beginning of the song that’s spoken.

From about 0.20 to 0.50 there’s a case to be argued. It’s done in somewhat of a (hillbillyish) rap manner with a rhythmical structure that’s reminiscent of rap. So there are elements in there that you could call hillbilly rap. Actually, that’s the only bit I like - it is at least interesting. The rest is, to my mind, copping out and veering back to mainstream countryish in order to avoid offence or confusion.

ETA - BTW, thanks for posting. Interesting.

This song does remind me of CW McCalls Convoy. It had a narrator and a similar attitude as Hell Right.

But Hell Right is definitely edgier and more Rock n roll.
