blankin' A

I’ve asked this of Cecil. I’ve asked it on the AOL board. I’ve asked it of Cecil again. Now I’m asking it here.

What does the “A” mean in the expression “Fuckin’ A”?

From this thread I was given the impression that it’s “fucking aye.” Like “fucking right.”

Forgive my naïveté, but under what kind of circumstances would such an expression be employed? And are less severe forms, like “bloody A” or “gosh-darn A” ever heard?

It’s just a term of agreement.
Office Space:

“Hey that’s a really good idea”
“Fuckin’ A”

I regret replying to this question, but, being an eighteen year old, I feel it’s probably my area of specialty, or something. I don’t know if these are the origins, but Fuckin’ A definitely, today, is the same as Fuckin’ Ass, and is used interchangably. A means Ass. I feel so dirty.

Furthermore, it’s used for both positive and negative reactions. Back in Dallas, Texas, at least at my high school, it was used as a term of approval. You can refer to the extremely high quality movie Office Space for judicious use in this sense. However, here at my New York college, all these damned Yankees, they think you say it when something bad happens. God. It’s really, tragic to behold. So that’s it. Hope this helped. I guess.

Oh, finally, I’m not sure, but I think if you want another movie, you might check out the Big Lebowski. For some reason, when I think Fuckin A, I think the Big Lebowski. Plus, it’s hilarious. If you’re eighteen.

P.S. I see now that Cisco has already referred everyone to Office Space. Still, you need the entire movie to understand the context. Brilliance.

I’ve never heard ‘fucking A’ used before.

However, in reply to Achernar, I have heard the phrase ‘frikkin A’.

‘Fucking A’ sounds like quite a harsh thing to say. I hear ‘frikkin A’ used as a way of saying “damn straight”.

I always associated this phrase with the Marines, or maybe just Marines as portrayed in the movies. It’s just a very strong way of saying, “Yes, I really agree with you.”

I have heard and used this term for at least 30 years and have heard it elongated to “Fuckin’ A rights” and shortened to just “k’nay”. Its closest translation to more contemporary idiom is “That’s what I’M talkin’ about”

Fuckin’ A.
