Blast from the Past - Home Decor, 70s edition

“Early American” flowered velvet like furniture. Dark knobby wood or faux wood. lots of brown, orange, gold. Gah, I’m having flashbacks.

Even better are the swag lamps.

Fuck you all for ruining my life. You’ll see! It’ll happen to you, too! Just wait…

I bought a 1950s house from the original owners in 2003, as well (I own a different 1950s house now). There had been some 70s updates. There was an entire wall of mirrors with a gold marble pattern on them in the living room, which was painted a sickly yellow. I don’t clearly remember the carpet we removed that covered the parquet floors, but it was from the 70s as well.

Similar to your house, they had not replaced the pink and white swirly tile in the bathrooms. We never replaced that, because I loved it.

My parents seemed to be very into the decor of the 70s. We had wood paneling and brown shag carpet in the living room. The kitchen had orange Formica countertops and orange cactus themed wallpaper. My mom sold Home Interiors for awhile, which offered things like plastic fruit, resin bird wall decor, colonial Spanish themed candle holders, that sort of thing.

That pretty much describes our kitchen! Ours was built in '67 and is completely original: amber formica counters, avocado green oven and stovetop (both totally fugly and well past their expiration date), coffee brown cabinets and amber glass cupboards that slide open. One of the panes is cracked and I’m having a helluva time trying to find a replacement. And some point someone added a dishwasher and I think that’s the unly update the house had ever had.

What? No love for cottage cheese splattered on the ceiling?

Our swag lamp looked more like this.

My uncle had one like this:

It was groooovy, man!

What’s old is new again.

It’s odd, I look at those pics linked in the OP, and while I acknowledge those sorts of items were found in home decor throughout the 70’s, for some reason they don’t create the impression of transporting one to that era. They’re more like individual pieces from an era that somehow when taken collectively ultimately fail to capture the essence.

My wife and I have spent 30 years replacing all that stuff and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let it back into my home!

Not today, rattan!

The description of the book: Harsh man.

Just think, in 50 years people will be describing “the hideous 2020’s decor.”

I always think about that when I’m watching home shows. “Eww! The kitchen’s all white!”

When I think of growing up in the 70’s I think of the rough-textured sofas. Those of you from that era know exactly what I mean.

This is the post that really takes me back. < shudder >

My sister had three or four of those brown macrame owls, strung on driftwood, hanging from the walls of her apartment. Lots of pampas grass fronds stuck in Pier 1 baskets on the floor, too.

Yep, lived it. A lot of the stuff posted here doesn’t scream 70’s to me. Some is more 60’s.

Mmmm…nubbly.
