Grrrrrrrr… Wasted two hours of my life this afternoon wrestling with an unwanted update to email on one of my computers. Dammit, Microsoft, I’m happy with Mail on that one, don’t want to switch to New! Improved! Outlook on that machine! Leave me alone!
Oh, I have to sign in and set up Outlook anyway, just to toggle something to go back to Mail? And I have to use my phone to get the security code. And now Outlook says it can’t set up one of my email addresses?
Okay, so (with more redundant code-verifying) we can get my other main email account set up? Good; now – oh, lovely, where’s my contact list? Where’s the menu to change fonts?
Crap, at least I can toggle back to Mail. And that works, it looks like…
Hey, where are the test emails I sent from Mail? Wait… now in Sent, but not arriving in my Inbox on that machine. Check on my other desktop…
Sigh. Eventually got the test emails in one email account, but where are they in the other? And back on the bollixed-up computer?
Reboot everything. Eventually things work – except now the new Outlook account isn’t even opening on the updated machine. At least Mail still is working on that machine, and both email accounts are working in Outlook on the other desktop and the laptop – in Windows 10, anyway; I haven’t checked yet on the Win11 laptop. So I still have all my email accounts on all my machines working.
Meanwhile, I’ve never used Outlook. Never. And yet if I’m doing something online and request something be emailed to me, Outlook is the program that opens.
Yesterday I wanted to email a PDF Adobe, and it opened Outlook. So I shut down Adobe and reopened the PDF in Foxit and the exact same thing happened.
We use Google Workspace (Drive) at work for email, office apps and cloud storage. Those fuckers are always ‘improving’ some damn thing and there is never any support even though this is a paid service. They will break something and leave it broken for years. I would switch to MS products but our emails and website are all already on the Google service and it seems like a lot of bother for probably the same kind of isues in a different flavour.
Ive never used oultlook. Maybe used thunderbird or some such thing years ago. Ive been using Gmail for twenty years I am sure and had some other web based email before that. Those email links in web pages and other apps have never worked. I haven’t seen them try to launch Outlook in quite sometime
Once upon a time I made a Usenet post where I stated Windows 95 was a virus. Someone responded with “No. A virus is small, efficient, and does what it is supposed to do.”
