Blood Pressure - where did the "normal" values come from?

My doctor tells me that my blood pressure is borderline high, so I’m gathering information on blood pressure. We (doc and I) have discussed medication vs. diet/exercise etc. I’ve found plenty of cites that say 120/80 mm Hg is “normal”, and anything over 140/90 is “high”.

There is plenty of advice out there, some credible, and some that’s well - not so much. For a skeptical guy like me, it’s hard to know what to believe.

So my GQ is, where did the “normal” values come from in the first place? Was there some study of thousands of people, with correlation between their pressures and their ailments? Are there on-going or recent studies? Why is this information so elusive?

Any comparison between the effects of blood pressure, and the side effects of medicines that help control BP?
