When one gets a blood test from their doctor, are they able to see everything that might be wrong with the blood (and body) or only what they are looking for? For example, if one is getting a check-up on his or her cholestrol and has for some reason contracted HIV, will the doctor find that virus in the blood or only if they are looking for it specifically?
There are literally thousands of blood tests. A test for cholesterol will not detect HIV. A complete blood count will not detect diabetes. When your doctor orders a blood test, ask what is being tested for. If you have specific concerns, or would like to consider specific tests, bring it up with your doc.
