Blow My Mind with Some Obscure Rock and Roll

In my high-school years and into my adulthood, the local radio station played “Happy Boy” every Friday at 5PM to kick off the weekend. It will always hold a special place in my heart because of that memory. I didn’t actually learn about the Beat Farmers until my 30’s, and I had a good laugh when I stumbled upon “Happy Boy” and finally learned whose song it was.

It’s exceedingly dumb, but of course it was meant to be. Hubbahubbahubbahubbahubba. . .

I should have thought of this before I posted my last msg. Oh well.

Here’s a little “Budget Rock” from 1990’s San Francisco’s Cable Access TV: The Mummies, performing, “The Fly.”

That is awesome!

Hehehe, the surf rock band I was in used to cover that song, still love it.

“She Sheila” by the Producers. Perfect 80s power-pop/New Wave/whatever you want to call it:

While we’re at it, Zion, Illinois power-pop band Shoes from the late 70s/early 80s. If I remember right, they recorded their first album or two in their living room (I know, everybody does that now.) This one was recorded in the studio. Great hooks in all their music. They were an influence on Chicago power pop bands to come, including Material Issue.

The Roosters (1966) from Westchester, CA (LAX)

Rudi Protrudi and the Fuzztones:

That did blow my mind! Not very often you see a jaw harp as the main instrument. What is the blow horn thing called?

Looks like a didgeridoo.

It puts me in mind of Mongolian throat singing on speed.

The news that Greek actress Irene Papas has died reminded me of her vocal work for the band Aphrodite’s Child. (The whole “666” album is kind of mind-blowing, but this cut in particular… just, wow.)

Howzabout “We Are The Moles” by The Moles?

I defy you to provide any information about this late 60s band.

Any search will likely turn up an entirely different band called The Moles. They have some great songs too!

Here you go:

Attempting to escape their new image, they released a pseudonymous double A-side single in late 1968 as the Moles - “We Are the Moles (parts 1 & 2)”.

They succeeded, at least with me.

Much obliged!!!

De gustibus and all that, but of all the adjectives this brings to mind, “mind blowing” is low on the list, but even then, not in a good way.

This thread reminds me of a short joke on SNL about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I’ll call your Shoes and raise you the Redwalls – another weirdly named suburban Chicago band (from relatively affluent Deerfield) who somehow channel vintage Beatle-esque bands like Badfinger and whose singer has McCartney’s raw-throated “Dizzy Miss Lizzie” down cold. Three albums and then poof!

Not sure how obscure, but I always loved this song sung by the son of a central Illinois hog farmer.

Man, if I could play guitar like Warner Hodges, I would die happy.

And as long as I’m taking it in THAT direction, how about a little Goober with your peas?

And SCOTS surely isn’t obscure to anyone who likes good music, but here’s just one fun of many. Another guitar god - and Mary is IMO one of the most underheralded bassists.

Aw hell, while I’m here….

So, can you tell my taste in guitar?

One of my favorite Dylan covers. :+1:
