If you could tell the world about one non-mainstream rock/punk/ska band, which would you pick?
I’d have to choose either Finger Eleven or Nickelback, both great Canadian rock bands, but both have been steadily gaining popularity in the past few years and are gradually slipping into the “mainstream” realm
Anyone heard of Modest Mouse? I keep reading articles which peg them as “the next big thing” ™, but my half-hearted experimentation with them through Napster revealed nothing revolutionary or particulary good. Just my opinion though.
The new album, Lost and Gone Forever, was produced by Steve Lillywhite. As a result, it’s WAY more popish then their older albums, Parachute and Goldfly. Demons is off of Goldfly, so it’s darker and wierder. I prefer the Goldfly stuff, myself. There’s another song you’d probably like off that album, Outrider, Rocketship.
There is a band out of Raleigh, NC called Vozuluzov. They play techno/industrial sounding stuff and sound great live. I think they can be found at http://www.vozuluzov.com
Coincidentally, Xizor and I both have nicknames which originate from a Star Wars book called Shadows of the Empire. God, it’s been a long time since I read a Star Wars book.
I’ve heard of both Finger Eleven and Guster, and have albums from both of them, and like them muchly.
Two other good less mainstream bands include Unwritten Law, a punk band that been around a few years and Crease, which was a local band in my area but they got signed and have released their major label debut.
Muckafurgason.
Janeane Garafolo’s favorite band.
She told me so.
Well, me and about a hundred other people when she MC’d their show.
Got their CD called Tossing A Friend. Highly recomended.
Eclectic/funny as all hell. From rap and metal, to country and samba-flavored tunes. All very tongue in cheek.
For instance they do this song which comes off as a gangsta style rap, which is actually an ode to lunch.
Also do a catchy number called Atari 2600 about their love for the old game system.
Catch their live show. It’s entertaining to see them trade instruments every other song.
Concussion. My neighbor is the bass player and I’ve been to a few shows and many practices. They have a CD for $10 that you can buy off a web page and is C.O.D. (Cash on Delivery) The URL is www.flashpointdesign.com/concussion.
New York, New York - a rock classic no one has heard.
And who will forget the tender love ballad (You, you’re really nice, you gave me) “The Blue Crusties”
Rock on Herbie, Lyle, Garrett (Wolfman), and Tommy!
Right on brother. Although you have the luxury of being a bit more ambiguous. Beside being Dash Rendar’s ship, you could also be a Movie, a jet-ski and a Jimmy Page CD, among other things.
