Blow My Mind with Some Obscure Rock and Roll

Britain’s answer to the Sha Na Na variety show:

Atmospheric metal from Iceland

This song was a minor American hit when I was in high school.

Around the same time, this became perhaps the only song ever to make the American Top 40 that’s about an inflatable sex doll.

Just saw on another board that Rush did indeed want to tour with King’s X, and vice versa, but they were never able to synchronize their touring schedules.

this one is close to my heart, as I’m friends with some of the band, plus they just did their farewell concerts.

Mr. Dave has been a National Treasure for a long time. (Lindley)

Indeed he is, I hesitated whether he was obscure enough for this thread, but decided that El Rayo X probably was. For anyone who feels I’ve soiled the thread with commercialism, well, you’ll get over it.

Here’s a tune by Flash & The Pan, who were both members of the Easybeats (“Friday On My Mind”); George Young is the brother of Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC.

Hey St. Peter

I’m not sure if this is classified as proto-New Wave or what.

Flash and the Pan did two albums of apocalyptic rock and roll. Great stuff.

Here’s “Let the Captain Beware.”

Oooh, oooh, oooh! This is what I listen to when I mow the yard. There’s a British track list and an American track list. I alternate between them.

Flash and the Pan were a one-hit wonder in Germany (maybe elsewhere too) in the 80s with “Midnight Man”. It was a big hit and got a lot of airplay.

Also: Atomic Bitchwax, “Come On”; Dungen, “Familij”; Patti Smith, “Strange Messengers”; Negro Problem, “Repulsion (Show Up Late for Work on Monday”)

Never heard of it here in the US, but good for them.

I just looked it up: 18 weeks in the German charts in 1985, peaking at #7. It was also a hit in…Switzerland.

Cool thread!

First I heard this.

Flash and the Pan was a side project for Vanda and Young, and they didn’t tour.

Well, 1985 was smack dab in the video days, so you didn’t necessarily need to tour to promote your records.
