So we are leaving for a vacation soon. My wife makes all the plans such as flights and hotel reservations. Well, almost all the reservations. She just informed me that I was supposed to book the room at the airport in Paris. Which of course I didn’t do. So now I am finding out that there are not many rooms available. In fact, the few that are available are only available if you book two or more nights. Who the fuck stays at an airport hotel for more than one night?
Depending on timing, I do.
If you’re flying from the US to Europe, you’re going to arrive around dawn. If for whatever reason you can’t make a connection until the following day, getting a room for that evening is great. After the typical check-in time of 4pm.
But it’s dawn, you’re bleary-eyed, and really need a nap and a shower before you try to kill a day in whatever city the airport is. Now what?
The way to do that is buy the room for two nights; the first night where you check in very very late, like 8am the next morning, and the second night where you actually sleep overnight before flying out early on the next day.
I had to do that on my last South America trip. I’m gonna try to rough it in Europe this upcoming Monday morning. We’ll see how it goes.
Mini-est of mini-rants:
I ordered medium jean shorts. I received extra large jean shorts.
The shorts are going back, and I’m just annoyed.
It is 5 am and I just finished the second dose of the colonoscopy prep.
I do not like colonoscopy prep burps. Not sure I trust them, either. ![]()
My HVAC isn’t cooling or dehumidifying ![]()
Can SOMETHING go right this year, please?
I trust nothing during prep.
Dropped a yogurt on the floor, so there’s a clean area on the floor.
And the doctor said if I do not hear from them, then everything they cut off was benign. I prefer to get a confirmation either way.
At a minimum, I have to get another colonoscopy in 3 years instead of the 5 years that I was expecting.
I hope that your colon results were benign. I tend to share concern about my own so thought I’d share some sentiment.
Follow-up clinic appointment for my recent hospitalization this morning. My blood pressure was alarmingly low, and I was afraid they were going to send me to the hospital. However, they decided to give me IV fluids which increased my blood pressure enough that I was deemed safe to go home. They also did blood tests to verify things like my iron levels.
My legs are still not doing well. I had to have the driver of my transport help me get up the steps into the house. I’m hoping that this will clear up soon, as it makes it impossible for me get to the curb to get my mail.
Those symptoms sound a little rough with your vital signs. I wish you the best with the condition you’re in.
I’ve been checking my blood pressure several times a day and it’s been back in the normal range, so that’s good. I went to my ophthalmologist yesterday and at least my eyes seem to be holding on. I did still need help getting up the steps into the house. I have physical and occupational therapists coming over to work on my legs, as well as home health care. Fortunately, all of this is covered by my health insurance.
It’s great Lurkmeister that you’re getting such fine treatment. It’s sure a good place you’re in there.
The only discouraging thing was that after three months of increasing mobility it’s like I’ve taken (pun intended) three steps backwards. I had systems set up for being able to do things on my own and was even looking forward to some day being able to do my own grocery shopping instead of having to get things delivered. There are days when I almost wish I could just chuck it all and move to a care facility. But I value my independence too much.
@LurkMeister I am hoping you can take 4 steps forward soon!
The AMC app takes care to tell you that the movie start time is actually 25-30 minutes after the advertised time. That time has been used for trailers, with a Coke ad just before the movie starts. If you show up before the ‘start time’, you’ll see ads. Fair enough - I plan to show up right at start time or a tiny bit late.
Last two movies I’ve seen, they’ve broken the contract. The trailers don’t start until five minutes after the advertised time. I guess that means I can be even later to the theater, but if I start missing trailers (which I generally enjoy) I’ll be back to mini-rant again.
Just to make sure I understand you …
You’re saying that if they advertise a movie start time of 7:30, when really happens now (new policy) is nothing at 7:30, then at 7:35 they run ~30 minutes of trailers and ads until ~8pm, maybe 8:05. Then they run the actual movie?
I’d be asking for a refund on the way out the door long before the movie started.
When was the last time you have been to the movies? Long trailer packages are not new. I can remember going as a kid in the 1990s and knowing that I had at least a 15-minute grace period after the posted start time and when the actual movie began.
Asking for a refund because they showed trailers… ![]()
I think the frustration is more aimed at the five minutes of adverts before the trailers.
From Folacin yes. I was responding to LSLGuy.
What is really frustrating is when the AMC app specifically points out that a certain showing does not have trailers and the movie will start at showtime, so I get there early… and then it has the normal 25-mins trailers anyway. I have had that happen a few times.
That seems about right.
We went to the theater a couple of weeks ago and we were running late. My wife was stressing but I told her I didn’t care because these days you reserve a seat like you would a seat on a plane, and all we were going to miss were commercials. We were 10-15 minutes late and still saw a bunch of trailers.
Growing up, seating was first-come. first-served, and you’d have maybe 15 minutes of trailers (but probably closer to 10). No commercials for Coke or car insurance or whatever like today. So back then you’d always want to arrive early. It’s a totally different experience now.
