Blue Origin launching people into space in July

Yeah…I feel the media in some cases have misinterpreted Shatner’s reaction, although this in-depth CNN article does a good job of getting it right.

Recently, I saw an article that (correctly IMO) said he had experienced the “overview effect,” which for many is a positive although often overwhelming feeling, for him it was a sense of grief. No doubt (as mentioned in the CNN article) influenced by his worries about the environmental problems on Earth.

To me, it’s interesting that this happened to him, because (1) Shatner’s spent a lot of his life portraying a bold space explorer, and (2) his perception changed so much during his very brief foray into actual space. Although he said he felt grief, he also said he “hopes he never recovers” from this. Which seems in contrast to media stories saying he “had a terrible time” in space.

Godspeed, Ed Dwight!

He was not accepted into the astronaut program in the early 1960s, although I have a feeling his race was not the reason why, and he has also broken William Shatner’s record for oldest person in space.

The parachute situation isn’t so hot:

Just two out of three parachutes fully inflated:

It still had a safe landing, but ideally you don’t actually spend the margin built into the system.

And that’s why they use three of them.
