Saw BV maybe 20 years ago, the other day, I looked up the scene where Hopper has Stockwell sing “In Dreams” on YouTube. My plan was to send it to a friend who’d been discussing her weird dreams on Facebook. DAMN, I couldn’t do that to her! I sent her a nice wholesome vid of Roy Orbison singing it instead.
I hope that it is in the original widescreen format. I remember the pan & scan version being one of the worst mutilations of an original piece of art I have ever seen.
Great movie, with some images that will stay with you a long, long time. Dennis Hooper clearly should have won an Oscar as Frank, dammit. I saw it again not long after Twin Peaks began its run, and was struck by the many Lynchian stylistic similarities.
Tangent: I have vivid memories of first seeing Blue Velvet in a Manhattan movie theater on a beautiful fall night when it first came out in 1986, with my fifth cousin, on whom I had a huge crush at the time. We went out for dinner afterwards and learned only when the bill came that the restaurant didn’t accept Visa, only MasterCard (the only time that’s every happened to me in my life), which neither of us had. Fortunately, we were able to scrape together enough cash to pay the bill, although the tip wasn’t what it ought to have been.
