I need a new pair of bluetooth headphones. My current pair tends to break up/cut out, especially if I wander more than a few feet from my device (phone or laptop). I need ear-covering headphones because earbuds fall out of my ears.
How can I be sure before I buy that the headphones won’t have the same issue as my current pair? is there some measurement that will tell me how powerful the bluetooth connectivity is?
Any particular recommendations also appreciated. I don’t have loads of cash, especially this time of year. Looking for something under $50.
Many thanks!
My advice would be to check that its not your phone first. You don’t want to buy a new set of headphones just to find it’s actually your phone that’s the issue.
My son just bought a new pair of Sony Noise reduction headphones and said they worked terrible. His phone would be in his pocket and it was always cutting out. We discussed it and thought it might be his phone; he had a +4 year old iPhone 6 that was dying. About a month later he got an XR and it made 1000% difference. Not only did they work from much further away, but the sound quality was noticeably better.
Pair your headphones to a friend’s phone and see if there are still problems or if you find a set you like, pair them in a store and move around to see how the reception works.
As far a specific recommendation go, you need to be more specific on whether you want options like:
[ul]
[li]on-ear versus over-ear[/li][li]Active vs passive noise reduction[/li][li]Importance of battery life.[/li][li]Price range[/li][li]Sound profile (brands like Beats are very bass heavy, some people love that (my daughter) some hate that (my son). No right or wrong, only what you prefer.[/li][/ul]
My son loves these but knew exactly the features and price he wanted.

It’s very likely that it IS his phone.
It is the phone that is transmitting the signal that the headphones are receiving. Signal strength (thus transmission distance) is controlled by the transmitter. A better receiver (bigger antenna, better gain) can help, but only if it has a transmitted signal to receive. All that comes from the phone.
I use the headphones I currently have on both my phone and my laptop. I have the same issues with both. There’s a crackling sound that silences whatever I’m listening to for a second or two at a time, and it’s frequent and annoying.
I’m looking for over-ear headphones–that is, the kind that cover ears completely and are attached to a headband that goes ear-to-ear. Also
I’m OK with either passive or active noise reduction
don’t care re: bass
battery life: 10 hours or so (not fussy)
price range: under $50 if possible
Thanks much!!
If you’re like me and buy almost everyone on Amazon, they have a very easy return policy. If you buy a pair and they don’t work as well as you think they should, you can return them at no charge. Lather, rinse, and repeat until you find a pair you are happy with.
Sorry, I can’t give a personal recommendation. The styles that I use are earbud style and water/sweat proof, so they’re more money than your budget.
If no one else has specific reco’s for you, I’m with Dolphinboy. Google “best bluetooth headphones for <$50”. I searched last year and Jaybird earbuds came up on a few lists. I looked at Amazon ratings but just before I ordered I saw them at my local Costco.
