Boardwalk Empire is back!

But didn’t Nucky pretty much give Slater the brush-off?

And what was the bit at the end with Nucky refusing to take somebody’s liquor delivery?

I saw it less than a full-on brush-off than a “I have acknowledged your offer and will think about it” and Slater seems to be going out of his way to prove his worth. Remember Thompson is results-oriented. Early on in the first season he challenged Darmody to make something happen for himself ( which resulted in the botched hijacking ).

Slater offers, Nucky responds neutrally, then Slater proves how he can be helpful by muscling the casino owner back into Thompson’s fold.

Refresh my memory. Do you mean when Slater runs off Harrow at the casino?

Yes, that’s it. There’s a delivery being made and the deliverers are being told go away we don’t want your hooch. WTF? Wasn’t the point just being made that Nucky’s casino was running out of liquor?

The casino was buying booze from Nucky. The rival gang showed up with a load and the manager was going to buy their booze. Thereby helping the rival gang at the expense of Nucky. (Although Nucky is no longer able to reliably deliver anymore.) So the new guy, in a show of allegiance to Nucky, ran them off. If you control the booze to a place, you control the place and you eventually can “persuade” them to cut you a percentage of the casino business.

Right. Nucky doesn’t own or control the casino ( directly ), he just gets kickbacks from them and sells them booze. Slater was driving out the Commodore’s ( actually Darmody’s ) agents who were trying to muscle in now that Nucky’s booze supply has been interdicted.

Best episode so far this season. After the incident at dinner between the two camps, it’s clear that Darmody is conflicted. Will he stay loyal to the Commodore or revert back to Nucky?

What I’m not necessarily following is the Chicago Outfit’s decision to no longer buy from Nucky. I understand it’s due to their new supply across the Lakes. Is that simply to end the story line or something else going on?

I enjoy this show, while it is slow paced and unorganized, each episode completes at least one puzzle and by the end of the season, everything comes together perfectly. Plus, paying good attention, you can pretty much get a good clue of whats going on. The suspense doesn’t force you to watch it next week, it just asks.

While Nucky’s brother is the most uninteresting character, what do you guys think he will do? I don’t see him reuniting with Nucky in the end, and possibly killing their dad… If he doesn’t reunite with Nucky, then he mostly will die. Jail would just cause him to rat Nucky out unless he can’t for some reason.

I believe the show is setting Jimmy up to go off the deep end but seeing that he is the most popular character, you’d figure they would keep him on the show. I just don’t see how they could resolve his conflict without us saying “what a waste of suspense”.

The bimbo girl in this show really pisses me off. It’s absolutely painful to watch a good show and then switch to her. Bimbos are slow, sure, but they literally put the camera on slow motion when they film her. She either is a bimbo or she has a mental illness… After she has the child though, you will see her become more sophisticated, or that’s what I expect.

I have a feeling Margaret is going to turn heel eventually although I’m not sure why. I do know she has a lot of information about Nucky and that her character is no longer weak and is getting stronger, as Nucky is making her feel powerful. She will probably use it against him. They have to exploit all his weaknesses eventually since he is the main character but we’ll see…

They showed Nucky as not fully trusting Capone speaking for Torrio. It is Capone after all and there have been plenty of young guys turning on their mentor in this show. Or was Torrio who Nucky was speaking to when he through the phone?

Agreed, how do you think it will play out with Slater being attracted to Margaret? Do you think she may be his goal? What other reason does he have to help Nucky? (Admitting, I have no clue who the guy was he came with)

One thing is clear, they never show Nucky as one for being played, he catches on quickly to everything. Even with the Slater situation, when he made his proposal, Nucky seemed to know he had other motives as he said “Who are you again and what do you want” (his tone)

The whole Slater/Margaret/Nucky triangle is smelling very reminiscent of the Furio/Carmela/Tony triangle from the Soprano’s, whom Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire creator) was a lead writer of.

I think that was when he got the call from the smuggler captain that the Coast Guard was seizing the liquor supply he was relying on for that night.

Anyone else still watching? They managed to pack a whole lot of insanity into that hour last night. I hope the writers have a way to keep Van Alden on the show. Gillian is one twisted person. She probably ripped her own dress in order to manipulate Jimmy into taking her home.

Yeah, she’s a wicked bitch. I’d still totally hit that.

I am. I just knew Gillian had slept with Jimmy, but I thought it was when Jimmy was much younger.

I’ll bet Harrow takes out Manny, and it won’t be pretty.

I don’t like how Margaret is turning against Nucky. She owes him everything. Not very practical on her part.

Wonder what Van Alden plans to do.

Yes, in my house we watch it religiously. Ditto on Jimmy’s Ma. Yikes. The real life person Nucky is based on did not go to prison until much later, for tax evasion IIRC, so my guess is he beats the rap on the stuff he’s currently accused of.

Van Alden will probably either suicide or will be shot by someone. No way he’s living to testify. But then what will happen to his baby? I think it was pretty obvious his wife doesn’t want it. What ever did happen to the baby mama? I must have missed that. Did she just slink on back to her old life?

Will Margaret be persuaded? I was sure for a minute she was going to say she’s stolen from and been unfaithful to Nucky. What would he have done (or will he do) upon finding out the truth? Throw her out on the street? She’d testify against him for sure then. Is she now a goner, too?

Lucy pinned the script to that play Van Alden forbid her for trying out for to a dirty diaper and took off to parts unknown.

I think Margaret’s daughter’s polio has her convinced that she was better off before Nucky came into the picture, so probably doesn’t think she owes him that much. Maybe the girl will recover enough that Margaret will keep quiet.

That may not have been the first time. She did talk about kissing his little winky when he was a baby.

I’m still watching, too, but the hatred between Manny and Jimmy is confusing to me. As far as I can remember, Jimmy borrowed money from Manny (or maybe he took liquor on credit; I can’t remember) and then just decided to not pay Manny back. Is that the long and the short of their beef?

It was interesting to see how poorly Jimmy was doing at Princeton, compared to his classmates. He really didn’t belong there. And while I doubt he’s familiar with the reference, the episode had him totally fulfilling the Oedipus prophecy.

He tried to have Manny killed, but the guy failed. Munya did not appreciate that one bit.

That had to be one of the most uncomfortable five minutes of television anywhere.

This season is really outstanding.

Right, but why did Jimmy try to have Manny killed? That’s the part that’s eluding me. It seems like (1) Jimmy owes Manny something like $5,000 (which, even back in the day, isn’t that much when you’re running booze), (2) Jimmy just decides he doesn’t want to pay, for some reason that’s inscrutable to me (maybe to show that he’s got his big boy pants on?), and so (3) Jimmy tries to get one of Waxy Gordon’s men to kill Manny, which fails and so THEN (4) Manny kills Angie and her lesbian lover.

It’s step (2) that seems weak to me, and so it feels like I’m missing something.

I was a little confused at what happened with Van Alden. But yes, that episode was nuts. I couldn’t figure out why the Commodore would try to defend Gillian after her smackdown of him when he had the stroke. And the bedroom scene…ewwwww!!! Something they’ve hinted at strongly but to see it actually happen was just gross.

I may have to watch it again.

Definitely keeping me tuned it- I’m surprised more Dopers don’t comment on it because IMHO it’s one of the better shows on TV right now. Also, I heart Owen…
