It’s a bit odd to me as well, but one thing is that he may not have the money. Remember all of these deals he has been setting up have yet to fully pan out. Owen blew up his booze, then Nucky undercut him in Atlantic City with his cheap Irish whiskey, forcing that road trip to unload the dilute “medicinal alcohol.” He keeps getting by going more into debt with the idea of future profits bailing him out and $5,000 is serious scratch in the 1920’s/30’s.
Now surely the Commodore or his rich backers could foot the bill, but maybe they refuse on principle or maybe Darmody is too proud ( quite possible ) to ask. But meanwhile Manny was his first debt and has been continually prodding him, while Darmody has been shown to be a wee bit hair-triggered when pushed.
In the scene in which Owen ran into an acquaintance in a bar and they get into a knife fight in the men’s room, it sounded like they had Belfast accents. Did I hear that right?
The man’s name was Del Grogan and apparently he’d informed on “the cause”(Sinn Fein) to the Black and Tans and then fled to America. Owen had been looking for him for a few months.
I’m glad they’ve finally given Nucky a worthy adversary in the form of the DA. I like the show, but it kinda suffered from Nucky not having anyone in is weight class to go up against. Darmody’s self-sabotaging kept him from being an effective foil, Van Alden’s too dysfunctional, the Commadore looked like he’d be a good villain until he had his stroke, Eli’s too stupid, etc. etc.
I think Gillian is one delusional sociopath, so I don’t think doing the nasty with Jimmy is a “regular” occurance. She may think it’s time to re-kindle this sick relationship now that Angela is out of the way. However, I think that Jimmy is truly grieving the loss of Angela. He was so strung out on blow when he almost killed Gillian for saying that Tommy will hardly remember Angela, that he knows her presence is the root of the problem and yet he can’t walk away from it. She is supremely manipulative, knows how messed up he was and used that knowledge to finish the Commodore. Gillian is trying desperately to wipe away any good memory of Angela and will happily replace her in the bedroom, either Jimmy climbs the stairs or he stays at the murder scene. Either way he’s doomed.
Not gonna lie, I am bummed at Jimmy’s demise. This show is so excellent though. Michael Pitt drew an amazing character, and the camera just loves him. I think the show took a risk to bump off someone who is a popular character like Jimmy, but it’s one of those risks that could have a great payoff. Now Nucky is clearly the man in charge. I almost forgot that he was the lead character.
I was also surprised, even thought right off I knew that telling Jimmy they had Manny was bait. I liked both Jimmy and Angela, so sorry to see them gone when the wicked mother G is still alive (and has a new “son” to f-up).
I can’t believe Margaret gave the deed to the church. I just can’t wrap my head around the stupid.
I’m surprised that they killed Jimmy too but he obviously knew it was coming. I should have realized it too when he gave his son his dog tags. Margaret figured it out which is why she gave the land to the church.
I’m glad that they are keeping Van Alden around. He’s in Cicero, IL which is where Al Capone made his home when Chicago got too hot. This will be fun.
WAY bummed about Jimmy. Can’t believe that Nucky bought into blood being thicker than water, since Jimmy really did love him more than Eli.
Are we supposed to understand that Jimmy made his offer to Nucky and did what Nucky needed knowing that it still wouldn’t be enough, because he was ready to die anyway, having lost Angela and killed his father, on top being all broken by the war to begin with? Because otherwise it makes no sense for him to know he was going to his execution.
I wonder what Richard will do.
And MARGARET…HOLY SHIT. What the HELL does she think is going to happen after that?? Is she really counting on Nucky’s declared love of her to get past THAT???
