a construction worker, and can expect to be sent to projects as far as eighty miles away from home.
on a daily basis?
Which could be reality – doubtful – or simply a paucity of imagination on your part.
Claiming ICE vehicles are the only real cars makes me suspect you won’t embrace EVs until they go BRAAAAAP!!! and roll coal when you tromp on the throttle.
I’m picturing a future from The Marching Morons. All EVs have sound generators and small diesel tanks and a small combustion chamber to roll coal on demand. And the rubes love it.
How long do any of you suppose a construction project lasts?
I can be on a project for months at a time. Possibly even a year or longer.
If I am on a project that is that far away, then yes, I am going to be driving back and forth between home and that project, on a daily basis, for as long as I am on that project.
It is you who is being willfully ignorant and dishonest, regarding the circumstances at my home, and how they would impact the feasibility of installing an EV charger, here.
You’re accusing me of lying, because the actual circumstances do not match what you want to claim them to be.
EVs would work for FD except in the case where they have a big multi-alarm fire & are on scene for hours. Yes, that’s a small minority of calls & once hoses are all over the place you can’t just roll in another piece of apparatus to replace the first one with the nearly empty battery. Maybe the answer is for a city to to get some EVs & then a utility vehicle with a generator / battery bank & a long extension cord to recharge that first-in EV for those rare big, long fires. Right now, you just have someone either walk over a can of diesel or use something akin to an construction site refill truck / home oil truck with a long hose to refill them when needed.
EV ambulances & cop cars work much better as they tend to not be parked so close in & therefore, can be swapped out when their charge starts running low.
Around here some of the trash trucks are CNG; don’t know anything about cost to purchase but refueling is free; they’re just tapping the methane from the decaying trash in the landfill that would otherwise go into the atmosphere.
In some locations (few today, but expanding), peak rates can depend on when electricity is generated. If a provider has significant capacity from solar and/or wind, middle of the day might be the cheapest.
Almost twenty years ago I was in exactly the kind of situation Bob is in. I worked new construction, lived in an apartment, and often drove 150-200 miles round trip every day to get to work. Back then, I bought one of the smaller, more fuel efficient trucks because that was the best option. As it happens, that truck has served me well ever since.
Today, I’d probably buy a plug-in hybrid like the Ford Maverick. It charges with a regular plug, runs on battery for the first few miles, then fires up a small ICE for the remainder of the journey. These are the vehicles for people like Bob, because they fuel up as easily as a regular car but run far more efficiently. Electric cars are great, and even electric trucks are getting better, but there are systemic problems like Bob’s that no full electric vehicle will ever solve.
Not a mod, but a suggestion, we’ve acknowledged Bob’s hurt feelings, but a lot of the general talk is useful for all, so I’d rather see us post in the parent thread with the useful info, and Bob can sulk about his hurt fee-fee by himself. Unless he does something else Pitable. Since there are plenty of posters who won’t read or participate in Pit threads.
Think of the others who are losing out because of Bob’s dickishness, won’t you?
As has been pointed out - your needs are your needs. You do you.
But what you’ve done is shit all over EV’s because apparently you think YOUR NEEDS are more important than everyone else’s needs. That since an EV does not work FOR YOU, then they are not “real cars”.
Your attitude seems to be: " I want what I want, so fuck you, everyone else because I’m the most important person in the universe"
Nice selective edit. You left out the part where I acknowledged that that EVs don’t fit your circumstance. As I indicated earlier, I don’t know if you’re fundamentally dishonest or painfully ignorant or tragically unintelligent or some combination of all of them. Given your vile bigotry in other threads, I am leaning towards unintelligent now but I could be persueded otherwise.
To whatever degree I have acted like a “dick”, it is not nearly so much as almost everyone else in this thread has acted. Perhaps some of you seriously need to do something about the beams in your own eyes before you fuss about the mote that you think you see in mine.
I have never advocated that anyone for whom an EV is a reasonable choice should be denied that choice.
For me, a real car is a much better choice than an EV could ever be; and I am being called a “dick for saying so. Some of you have even hinted, at least, if not come out and flatly said it, that I should be denied this choice. Many of you have claimed to know my needs better than I do, and to know, better than I do, how to meet my needs.
No Bob. You seem to think that YOUR EXPERIENCE is the only one that matters. You went in that other thread and dumped a nugget of ignorant shit into the punchbowl.
You don’t want to buy an EV in 15 years time, based on your current level of ignorance? Fine. You do you.
You think your opinion is more important that actual factual information. Terrific.
But then don’t whine and pout like a little child when you’re called on your misrepresentations and selfish view of how the world should revolve around your own wants.
