Potential to inspire Bungie (Bungle?) to create the Master Chief!
I’m not sure Vader is into that, but you can probably find it on a Star Wars slash site somewhere.

Actually, Bungie’s outright stated that they are entirely unrelated series on a couple FAQ’s. So there is an official word about the Halo-Marathon thing. They just recycled a lot of thematic content for the new(er) series. As opposed to Pathways into Darkness, which IIRC, is officially recognised as tieing into Marathon’s backstory.
Dude, chill out. Yes, Halo is over-rated. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a great game series; it is. It’s just not the “OMFG HALO IS TEH AWESOME!!!1!” game that people act like. And I don’t think anyone who knows about Marathon would even begin to say Halo’s a better single-player series (outside of the fact that being newer, there is some inevitable technological advantages it enjoys). Marathon was excellent, both as a game series and as a story. I just thank Og that my junior high had a Mac lab, and our teacher let someone load the games onto the computers there. Recess was awesome!
And for all you haters, please take the time to check out the Halo Exanded Universe (ARG’s, novels, comics), or just read a good summary even. They’ve built up an awesome storyline for the series. And of course, Halo really does have one of the best old-school FPS multiplayer franchises still going. Not as good as the Half-Life 2 mod scene, but I’d say it ranks up there with Unreal and Quake. Nowadays, everyone else is going for tactical shooters, or tactical/arcade hybrids like Gears of War.
I personally think a big part of Halo’s huge recognition is that for many, many people (read “frat guys”) it was the first time they had LAN party style experiences, or played solid arcade-style online multiplayer FPS gameplay.
Oh, and as to the OP; If it’s movie-only Boba Fett, Chief’s got it in the bag. If it’s full-blown EU Fett, I think John-117’s shields and physical superiority still has the edge, but I bet it would be a close fight.
Honestly? I never got the love for Boba Fett based on the movies. Yeah, he looks awesome, but it wasn’t until they started building on his character with the EU that he really became cool, or even noteworthy for that matter.
Damn, edit time ran out.
My take on typical math-ups:
1.) Chief versus Fett - replenishing shields and the ability to take an anti-tank round give Master Chief the win. Fett’s Rocket pack doesn’t give him enough of a flight profile to evade Chief using homing missiles or a good rapid-fire gun to bring him down.
2.) Master Chief vs. Samus Aran - Replenishable shields are nice, but Chief’s weapons are conventional weapons. They aren’t designed to pick off a target who can wade through lava for minutes at a time and survive. If Samus’ suit is fully upgraded, the beating her shields can take allow her space-fantasy-esque firepower to bring down the man. If she’s running bare-bones, I say Chief takes it.
3.) Chief versus Vader - Force Choke. 'nuff said. Unless Chief’s a force user (which he’s not), he’s got no counter to this. Unless he snipes Vader from miles away (unlikely given Vader’s “sense” range) he’s got nothing on the whiny-brat turned supervillain.
4.) Fett vs. Samus - Samus basic? Fett loses (Flying Pirates can’t take her, he won’t either). Samus upgraded? minimal time.
5.) Fett vs. Vader - Interesting. I’m going to bet it’s Vader, but Fett is the clone/son of a Mandalorian, wearing Mandalorian gear. These were a people who specialized in fighting Jedi, albeit they usually lost anyways.
6.) Samus vs. Vader - Samus, I think. She’s supposed to have mild psychic ability because of the Chozo blood transfusion. Plus she’s part Metroid now, according to Fusion. Even without her upgrades she can probably resist force-choke, and win by range advantage. Fully upgraded I think she can trash him by freezing him and using 5 missiles.
Well, Master Chief can one-hit-kill anybody that he hits on the back of the head.
Han shot Vader’s wingman from closer and Vader was surprised, he can be sniped, no probs.
Hey! Argent Towers!
I don’t know if you knew this, but apparently they’re giving away a free downloadable version of the Marathon series for Mac, Windows, or Linux! Thanks goes to rayh for making me aware of this in the Minerva 3: Metastis thread.
Oh, and Ford Prefect, you make a good point about getting the drop on Vader. As I was saying, though; Chief’s best bet against Vader is probably to snipe him, since I’m pretty sure Vader’s force-choke could be projected through the Mjolnir armor’s shield.
Actually, as far as utter fanwankery goes, I think Master Chief vs. Darth Vader is a more interesting matchup. MC would grind Boba Fett into a fine paste without much trouble. Darth Vader, however, is another matter. He has some pretty formidable armor himself (resistant to blaster fire, etc.), and a hand-held weapon probably at least as awesome as the plasma sword. Plus, he could reach out and crush MC’s throat, armor or no.
How about a young Boba Fett going toe to toe with Bobby Brady?
psst! Ogre, look up at Ford Prefect’s and my last few posts (#'s 25, 27, & 28).
Y’know, I normally actually read a thread before I respond…
:smack:
OK, OK, I know! MC vs. the dude from Clive Barker’s Undying.
C’mon, he took out Cthulhu-esque abominations from the Outer Deeps.
Screaming skulls, anyone? Anyone? No? Shit.
I don’t remember Boba running away. Are you sure you aren’t thinking of the shape-shifter?
The Master Chief wouldn’t need to take down Vader one-on-one. He could simply board the star destroyer that Vader is on and blow it up without Vader even getting close to him. Who’s gonna stop the Chief? Stormtroopers?
Besides, we don’t know just how extensive the MC’s cybernetic enhancements are. You’d figure that if they’d reinforce any part of his body, they’d start with the neck (at least so he doesn’t get whiplash while crashing around on a Warthog). Even if Vader can force-chock through armor and a force field (and I’m not totally convinced that he can), a Spartan neck would likely be more difficult to deal with than that of some bridge officer. How long can a Spartan continue to fight without breathing, anyway? I’d wager that it’s longer than an unaugmented human can; possibly long enough to kill Vader.
Sure, but Vader’s the End Level Boss. They gotta fight.
Yep, sniping or completely fucking over a Star Destroyer are the MC’s only options. But in the end even if the MC fails he won’t take off his mask and get all weepy with the local farm boy.
Master Chief isn’t just a guy in a fancy suit. He’s had all that fun body-reshaping stuff they stick into your average space marine. I don’t know if it would stop a Force choke, but I don’t think he could be outright killed that way.
Not only could MC whip Fett’s ass, Gordon Freeman could whip Fett’s ass. (And G-man could make Darth Vader his squealing bitch any time he felt like it.)
I feel like a dork for even reading this thread.
I love you guys.
