Bobby Fischer is being deported from Japan to US for 92' match in Yugoslavia.

That’s what I just said. You put Fischer only 6 places below whom you believe to be the greatest player of all time. What percentage of today’s grandmasters do you believe Ruy Lopez would outplay?

Come to think of it, it was on 5 places below.

It wasn’t a false analogy at all.

Let’s recap:
(1) Chunky Bum said that Kasparov et. al were better than Fischer
(2) You responded by saying “but they admire Fischer”. The clear implication here is that Fischer is, in fact, better than them, with exhibit A being that they admire him. In other words, you are using the argument “A admires B. Thus, B > A”
(3) MtgMan applied that argument to road engineering and showed it to be patently ridiculous
So… do you in fact think that Fischer is better than Kasparov?
(If I had $100,000 to burn, I would pay Bobby Fischer to come onto the SDMB, prove his identity somehow, and then spend a week posting about how the Modal Ontological Proof is bunk and Libertarianism is hogwash. Oh, man, that would be sweet  )

Lord have mercy, you must think I’m some sort of paper doll or cartoon figure. I would think no less of his art if he did that. In fact, I would think no less of him as a person — certainly, it would do nothing to amplify his already legendary personality issues. Many people think the MOP is bunk, but I hold them in high esteem nonetheless. They are people who hold that the argument is valid, but not necessarily sound, which is the correct way to consider it bunk. Nor do I withhold admiration for people who don’t like libertarianism. Olentzero did not like it, but he did not like it honestly — that is, he did not agree that peaceful honest people should be free to pursue their own happiness in their own way. At any rate, you misunderstood my argument with respect to Fischer, and inasmuch as I have already explained it in quite some detail, I refer to the prior explanation.

(This may be belaboring the point, but I hope you realize that I was just teasing you…)

I know I am late to this party, but I have a question. When I read about the deportation my first question was “isn’t there a statue of limitation on this type of crime?” So is there?

(I don’t care what happens to Bobby Fischer and have never understood the adultation that famous people get).

Since Fischer has been out of the public chess scene for decades, it’s pretty difficult to judge how he would fare against Kasparov today. Since Kasparov is still active in chess and Fischer is not, I assume Kasparov would win. But there’s no way of telling how today’s Kasparov would have done against Fischer in his prime.

Whew! :smack:

In general, the statute of limitations only stops the prosecution if the time between the crime and the crime being charged is too long. In Bobby Fischer’s case, he was already charged with the offense, so the statute of limitations does not apply.

And thank heavens you can’t just run away from awhile to avoid prosecution.

But Ted Kennedy’s off the hook, right?

Whoa!

Well, except for the part where you implied that he is comparable to God.

I’m starting to wonder if Lib is Fischer. :dubious:

Bolding mine. “Kookiness”? Talking to a houseplant is kooky, refusing to eat any food that is green because it’s green is kooky, calling for the extermination of an entire country (except the non-Jewish white people, of course) is not “kooky”, it’s irrational hatred and bigotry that probably borders on insanity.

I just read the New Yorker article mentioned in the OP. Bobby is in need of serious help.

It is remarkable that if you are nuts and unknown we call the doctor. If you are nuts and famous, we indulge you.

No, I’d say it’s pretty kooky, too.

And how is Ted Kennedy relevant to this topic?

He was never charged with anything when he drove his car into a river, killing his passanger.

You’re a nutcase.

Here is (allegedly) his home page:

On that is this link to his comments on 9-11:

Listen and make your own decision. In my opinion, he is as nutty as a fruitcake and has raisins for eyes.

He’s not just nutty, he is batshit insane.
