Body integrity identity disorder vs Transgender: Are we OK with surgery for both?

#NotAllHaters

I’m too damn tired to effectively argue right now. I have been for weeks. I need a bi-pap breathing machine. No matter how much I sleep, I do not wake up well rested. So-

I’ll just say I agree with Una Persson. Chances are 90% at least that I’ll agree with anything else she posts in this thread. Let me also say she shows much more calm and patience than I would. I remain, however, angry she will not help me obtain uranium.

True, but only because a hater is someone who hates someone because they are jealous of them.

But you don’t have the right to have concerns about something that is between consenting adults–in this case, the doctors who make the decision that surgery would help and the trans person who has the surgery.

Or, well, you do, but, if you voice them, and you’re not a doctor or expert who has figured out something better, it’s okay for people to judge you as either ignorant or transphobic.

And if your ignorance is fought but you still hold on to it, the latter is of course more likely. I’m glad you did not hold on to it.

Hmmm, can we extend this line of thinking to all decisions between consenting adults? If one consenting adult wants to buy marijuana and another wants to sell it, no one else has the right to any concern about it, much less to arrest them? If some consenting adults want to sell a health insurance policy and I want to buy it, no one else has a right to be concerned about it, much less to pass a law restricting it? If one consenting adult wants to hire another at 5$ an hour, no one has a right to be concerned about it, much less prevent it with a minimum wage law?

I am searching the internet to find help for my partner, he doesn’t want limbs removing, he wants to have limited use of his legs and start wearing full leg braces 24/7, no matter how much I search I seem to come up against a brick wall and it seems BIID seems the only thing that comes close. I would to hear from anyone who knows a therapist or group that can help and explore more what is the reason behind his compulsion.

Why do I have anything to do with this decision? These decisions are between a person and their doctor.

Old thread, but the only place I have an issue with BIID is when it’s going to start putting an unfair burden on society. Like, amputate both legs? Sure, knock yourself out, we as a society are fairly well equipped for people with no leg use. You even get to skip to the head of the line in Disneyland, now.

Want to knock off both arms? There’s pretty much no way to live like that without some sort of external care, and that could be a problem.

Being a transsexual who goes through with surgery would put you pretty squarely in the former category. By doing so you’re not exactly handicapping yourself, other than possibly socially and in that case the problem has far more to do with society than you.

It’s the same reason I eventually came to the conclusion that comparing transexuals to people who “think they’re napoleon” or “think they’re a dog” are spurious. What does it mean to treat someone who thinks their Napoleon like Napoleon? Do we have to give him control of the French army? If there’s some reasonable way to treat them like this that makes them happy it’s fine, but it’s not like we’re equipped to handle anyone claiming to be a couple centuries out of date failed emperor the way we are women. “Being a dog” is just inviting all sorts of ethical quandaries about treating people like animals.

I would like to formally apologize for mixing up my their/they’re in the last post. I will live in eternal shame.

No. Because you have to evaluate how those decisions affect other people. The lack of a minimum wage creates wages at the level of other, poorer countries in a place where the cost of living can’t support that. A lack of healthcare insurance drives up the cost of insurance for everyone and makes certain deals (like “you must accept preexisting conditions”) much harder to enforce without loss of profits for the industry. And, well, marijuana has a hotboxing problem–but that could be remedied.

The point is, this transgender stuff does not negatively affect you or anyone in general, so you have no right to interfere.

(Yes, there is the issue of how it will affect their family and friends, but then you get into other areas of morality to deal with that. Basically, having to switch your idea of their gender is less of a burden than them having to keep it. Well, that and property rights to your own body, which, while not absolute, do exist.)

Should a person who voluntarily inflicts a disability on himself be entitled to collect Social Security?

There are not many people in the biz who specialize in treatment of BIID, and working therapists who have experience with it are rare. If there’s a university with a psychiatric research department near you, I’d start there. Please feel free to PM me if I can help dig up some possibilities.
