I just read a travel book by a guy who went to Africa, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, etc. He was traveling rough-taking the transport that the poor locals took. In Bangladesh he saw all kinds of weird procedures being done in the street-like eye cleaning"-the practicianer wipes some poor guys eyes with dirty rags…and ëar cleaning". One guy he met made a living “cleaning” ears-it involves scraping the wax out of your ear canal, them oiling with mustard oil.
My question-these procedures sound very dangerous, and a good way to get an infection. Does anybody get killed by them?
Is he a medical professional? The world is full of quacks with sometimes dangerous procedures who part people from both wealth and health. Yeah that’s news.
Some old folk remedies work surprisingly well? Yeah that’s news too.
Gives a new meaning to the world “innoculation” ![]()
"While you have pink eye, lets give you a dose of every other eye infection there is ",
and that will the last case of pink eye you ever get…
Ear cleaning is definitely a thing, and extremely common in China. The twang of the various metal scrapers is an iconic sound in any tea house or beer garden.
I am sure it causes trouble now and then. But it is extremely common so I doubt it’s killing people en masse.
Some people, especially those of Asian descent, secrete very profuse, hard earwax, and if it isn’t periodically removed, it can actually compromise their hearing. Native Americans from Southwestern tribes often have this too, and this is one reason why their children are so prone to ear infections, both internal and external. There’s actually a tool called a “cerumen spoon” that’s a standard part of many Asian households, and people use it to scrape out this earwax (aka cerumen).
That was surprising to me too.
