I had to boil some honey to separate out and skim off broken up wax comb fragments. Has boiling the honey destroyed its self preservative qualities or will it still keep OK in the cupboard.
It’ll still keep but you’ve probably reduced some of the flavor.
You can eat the comb parts, you know. Do you just not like the texture of the comb in it? I’ll check with one of our profs here - he’s an apiarist (or however you spell “beekeeper” )
If anything, the honey will keep better, as you have pasteurized it. Honey tends to keep well because there is too much sugar and not enough water for contaminates to get a foothold. As long as you have replaced it into a very clean jar, you will be wasting a good worry to think about this for too long.
You can eat the combs without danger, although they won’t do you much good. The wax should slide right through a healthy intestine.
Next time consider filtering rather than boiling. You will get all the wax and bee’s knees out without losing the gentle aromatics.
Mmmmm…mead…
I like comb just fine in moderation. In fact I paid extra for the comb in the jar. The problem was that unlike prior purchases where you had comb and honey as distinct entities this jar had a partial comb and hundreds of little comb pieces shredded throughout the honey. I can handle comb in pieces but not after it’s been fragged.
