The ‘Viva la Bam’ thread got me thinking about another MTV show, “Boiling Points”.
I have to say that I think this show is HILARIOUS (but it annoys the shit out of my girlfriend). I love practical jokes and pranks of all stripes so I’m not surprised that I like it so much.
The prank set at the Chinese food restaraunt where the cashier only has change in Chinese currency is probably my favorite. Especially the part where he gets a cellphone call and turns around and has a full-on conversation with someone when, a moment earlier, he had an extrememly poor grasp of english when talking with the customer.
Anyone else like the show or am I just a sadistic creep that enjoys watching others get ‘punkd’ (a show for a future thread…)???
And then he denies it afterwards! My cousin from Beijing, indeed. I loved the expression on some of those peoples’ faces when he started speaking in perfect, unaccented English. Hee hee.
I watch it on occasion; it definitely has a certain appeal to me. It’s especially interesting to watch the ones predicated on provoking the contestant’s jealousy. It seems that the women get a LOT more vocal and overtly angry than the men, for some reason.
Last night was an ep where an Asian foreign exchange student won a challenge to keep his temper when a clerk would only give change in store credit, and it was obvious that he didn’t quite understand what was going on (at least at first).
“Nah man I’m just chillin’. Ok I’ll call you later my ninja. Peace…”
LOL!!! So funny.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. Most of my friends look at me slightly dissapprovingly before saying something to the effect of, “I knew you would like that show John”.
I’ve always loved hidden camera/prank shows, but the sadistic twist to “Boiling Points” makes it PERFECT. I can honestly, unabashedly say that it’s my favorite thing currently on television.
One of my favorites is the one where the cashier asks if they’d like to donate their change to charity, and then puts ALL of the change - including the bills - into the jar. Right when they’re already about to blow up over losing $16 or so, he reveals the charity is for HIM - he wants to get cable!
The other one that just made me LOSE it was when the guys are on the blind date with the girl, and she starts talking racy, mentioning that she and her “hot” roommate are into threesomes. She then calls the roommate to join them at the restaurant. Right when the guy’s getting really excited, in walks her rommate - a big, burly black guy! Freaking hilarious!
One more I remember because it was hilarious for a couple of reasons.
Four gay guys are set up on a blind date with one of the actors, who’s already kinda “mehhh” looking and balding to begin with. But the first words out of his mouth are chiding the date for his lateness because “his mother always said to be punctual.” Of course, his behavior and attitude go downhill from there.
The two reasons: first of all, one of the contestants, hearing that, immediately left. He lasted all of 11 seconds.
Secondly, at one point, the actor leaves the table for the restroom. ALL THREE of the remaining contestants immediately whip out their cel phones and call the friend who set up the date (put up to it by the show’s staff, of course) to complain and berate them for setting up this disaster in the first place!
Personally, I do not watch it out of general principle. I abhor the whole premise of this show, which seems to be “If you let an asshole walk all over you, we’ll give you…” Do they get a $100 bill or something?
I hate the rise of rudeness in our culture. I also hate the fact that so many people just take it, which is probably why so many jerks think they can get away with it.
I secretly believe that it’s not really a show at all, but video from their “Real World/Road Rules” screening process. “Did you see that! It only took 15 seconds for that guy to try to choke him. Poor impulse control. He’s perfect for The Real World”.
I think it’s the opposite. Don’t you win money if you snap before some time limit?
I also hate hidden camera shows and reality shows as a matter of principle. I can’t wait until someone finally freaks out and murders the Punk’d or Boiling Point crew.
