Yeah, but no more than you have to be particularly familiar with silent movies to enjoy Singing In The Rain.

I second this. A bit of a watershed moment for modern Bollywood, this movie. IMO, of course.

Most of the movies you’ve listed are from what I call ‘good’ Bollywood - an emerging(I think post-Dil Chahta Hai actually) set of directors and actors that do good work - making tight, good movies which are still rooted in Bollywood.

I’ve personally never understood the love that Shahrukh Khan gets, and I think most/all Indian men of my acquaintance would agree with me. Aamir Khan is far superior, in terms of quality of acting and choice of movies both.(His nephew Imran is doing some good work also. His debut Jaane tu ya Jaane na and later Delhi Belly - which also comes in English - are both eminently watchable)
Salman Khan of course, is a joke. His recent success (Dabang etc.) is based entirely on making juvenile wish fulfillment fantasies.

Heh, very true.

On a related note, I was recently watching a documentary on Singin’ In the Rain with my mother, whose favorite movie it is. We were discussing some of the over-the-top bits in Hollywood musicals, and I put on Om Shanti Om as an example of how other genres self-mock in very similar ways. She didn’t get the parallel. :stuck_out_tongue:

Good thing you don’t care about plots because they are all pretty much the same. Just like Hollywood love story clichés. Two people are in love but they can’t get together, or they are in love but don’t know it, etc. The music is excellent, the costumes are very colorful, the women are absolutely gorgeous, and you’ll see a lot of people dancing **at **each other. The dance moves are amazing!

I don’t know what movie this song is from but I heard it on the radio (WNUR-FM, Northwestern University) and had to wait several years before hearing it a second time and calling the station to get the title. Here is the video. I have no idea of what the words are and it doesn’t even matter. It is a beautiful song.
