Bomb Shelters and Bodily Waste

In all the portrayals of bomb shelters (or tornado shelters, etc.) I’ve seen on television, I have yet to observe a toilet. In reality, do they usually include such fixtures to make a long-term stay sanitary and tolerable, or are they constructed with only short-term threats in mind?

All the plans I’ve seen for both types of shelter include a chemical toilet.

Its a bit like an early Learjet then :stuck_out_tongue:

Out of related interest, how long till the all clear for a tornado?

I helped clean out a couple of civil defense shelters when I was a poor college student. Both of them had several chemical toilets.

They go quickly through the neighborhood. Maybe 15-30 minutes of actual weather. It’s the digging out from beneath the piles of rubble that will take more time. I wouldn’t want to be in a shelter without someone on the outside being aware of it…it could take days for them to remove the lumber and bricks and cars from atop the exit.
