This morning I was awakened by a loud blast that I initially thought was thunder. This mistaken belief was subsequently corrected by one of my teammates, who informed me that there are bomb testing grounds near our home at the Americorps base in Perry Point, MD. Every few minutes I’ll hear another KABOOM that shakes the house.
A quick check of the map shows you’re close by the Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

One bunk I had was immediately under the bow catapult of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Imagine trying to sleep while an enormous, steam-charged apparatus flung F-14’s into the air, mere feet above your head.
When I was a cruiser sailor, it was the 5-inch gun and the sonar that would keep you up.
At all times, your roommates could be counted upon not to keep the same hours as you. And on the cruiser, I had 95 of them.
Take my word on it, on those earplugs.
Back in college, few a couple of years I was sharing a house with thses guys who had a band, and they practiced in the room over mine. Basically, there was about 7 feet of air and ceiling separating my pillow from the drum set. At least they were pretty darn good. The truth is, I actually got used to it really quickly. Now I can sleep through anything, much to the chagrin of my wife who wonders why it is the baby never wakes me up…
