Bone, get yer standard-capacity magazines while the gettin' is good

It’s so weird to see all this excitement for a bog-standard object that served no purpose not already served by other, differently-sized magazines already in possession.

It’s like the excitement for the next Marvel movie, if the next Marvel movie was exactly the same as the previous Marvel movie except played at a different speed.

Well, THAT CERTAINLY explains some things.

Just another opportunity to jerk a giant gun-boner in the faces of people who are un-American because they don’t get giant gun-boners and subsequently jerk them.

Hilarious. Yes, how have you ever survived without banana mags?

Keep going, you’re almost there!!! Oooh, close your eyes and fantasize about Charlton Heston!

Adam Smith’s invisible hand? Or do you mean that you laid on your left one until it fell asleep before you…um…started warming your heart?

BANANA clips. :stuck_out_tongue:

A well entertained Citizenry, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to watch Iron Man 1, 2, and 3 without getting their fat asses up off the couch to change the disc shall not be infringed.

Don’t California ARs have some dumb screw-in mechanism for changing magazines?

Moderator Warning

This is an official warning for being a jerk.

You have already received one warning for inserting an inappropriate “gun boner” comment into a thread. I don’t know why you thought it would be appropriate to repeat this behavior.

This thread is about extended magazines in California. It is not about gun control in general or gun attitudes in general. You are free to express whatever opinions you have on the topic, but if you cannot participate in any sort of gun-related thread without immediately escalating into your broader opinion of guns and gun owners in general, then I strongly recommend that you avoid threads on gun-related topics unless these threads are already about the broader topic where your opinion would be relevant to the thread.

California has become a hub of innovation for ways to comply with their convoluted laws and still have something resembling a detachable magazine. First there was the “bullet button” and more recently the Juggernaut Tactical Hellfighter Mod Kit.

Putting aside the fact that that may be the most metal name possible, I find myself trying to think of a reason why somebody would need to do an “ultra-fast” replacement of a large magazine in weapon of that style and, well, er, um.

I’m not coming up blank, but I’m coming up blank for things people would actually be inclined to admit in the presence of, say, police.
That said, that’s still the most metal name ever, so I have to give them kudos for that at least.

Until Benitez’ rulings (and since CA Prop 63 passed), they were talking about 10-round magazines, not “large” ones. As for “trying to think of a reason why”, there are a number of shooting sports that are timed, and California’s requirement that a weapon be disassembled to reload it (simplifying here) is a distinct disadvantage in timed shooting contests.

ETA: and “Juggernaut Tactical” is the company name. The product is the “Hellfighter Mod Kit”. Still pretty metal though.

I may or may not already possess an unspecified number of standard capacity magazines. Always nice to get a few more pmags though.

Previous to this ruling - I would strongly recommend against this. It could be considered a felony. Even now I’d be cautious.

As for online ordering right now - I’m concerned about the tracking nature of online purchases and the ability to engage in future actions should the ruling be reversed. Right now there is a petition to stay the ruling.

It’s not just that the only difference is capacity, and a smaller one will always work. With many rifles, this might be true and the magazine size doesn’t matter, but with pistols while you generally can make a longer one and it will just stick out the bottom, but you can’t make a smaller one elegantly as they go into a fixed-length grip and have a flared base that can’t be recessed. For something common like a Glock, there is tons of OEM or third party support for CA-compliant magazines. But like a lot of what I own is 50+ years old and made by countries that no longer exist. You might be able to weld a block in the magazine or something, but it really serves no purpose except to drive up costs.

A little information about fugly California ARs. That first one looks so strange because a semi-unique design of the AR is the buffer tube that sticks out of the back and allows it to function properly.

You reckon they’ll get court orders for hundreds of internet retailers to release their CA customer list?

Wow. Nice.

Ruling stayed effective 5 pm tomorrow. Buy magazines while you can.

Or, alternatively…and I’m just throwing this out there as an option:

You could decide you have enough magazines, and don’t have to stockpile them just cuz.

Of course not, you.

I do suggest you read the ruling.

Well, I’ve wanted to buy a few different pistol platforms but haven’t found the right time. But I will buy some extra mags for a few different ones I’m considering so if I ever do buy them I’ll have the standard mags for them.

They’re enroute.

I knew the AG would appeal, but did not expect a stay while the appeal was pending.

IANAL, but here’s an interesting tidbit from the stay:

My layman’s reading of that is that if you buy a couple of magazines before 5:00 pm Friday, you can go ahead and keep on buying magazines.

It’s as if they’re one-time use or something. Which I suppose is the case in movies - they pop the empty out, let it fall, shove in the new one, and move on. I suppose it’s reasonable to assume that’s what’s done at shooting ranges and competitions too.

The alternative being that the gun owners have had these guns in their possession for weeks or years, and just never got around to buying magazines for them until now. Maybe they’ve been chambering shells one at a time by hand?

I could buy in to either scenario!

In the first, it’s like REALLY exciting! In the second, it’s kind of quaint and old-timey.
