Bonobos (Pygmy chimps) master fire: anyone have more info?

“Master,” in the sense that over a few months they got better at it.

I have no more info, but I’d also like to know more about another of that website’s articles: Irak: Possible Remains of Noah’s Ark Unearthed
ETA:

Adding to their credibility:
"World News Daily Report is an American Jewish Zionist newspaper based in Tel Aviv and dedicated on covering biblical archeology news and other mysteries around the Globe. "

And articles such as:
Austria: Telepathy-like Gene Discovered in Mice
Israel: Case of Virginal Conception Baffles Doctors and Scientists
Russian Scientists Discover Cure to Homosexuality
Bengali Man Pregnant with Twins

We need the old rolleyes smily.

Wow, usually I spend a little time checking if I’m in Kansas anymore.

My only excuse is I just woke up.

I’ve seen a recent commercial for a "discovery channel’ type show indicating bonobos were taught to build fires and cook marshmallows over it on a stick. I was VERY suspicious of it because it was clear the commercial was heavily edited. You would see them putting sticks on a pile, than a cut scene to an organized teepee of sticks on fire, then another scene of an ape throwing sticks on a small, different, fire.

Also you never saw them put the marshmallows on the stick or put them over the fire. You saw them holding a stick with marshmallows, then a scene with marshmallows over a fire (unknown who was holding it) then a scene of an ape eating a marshmallow off of a stick.

Very crappy editing and even worse attempt of trying to manipulate reality.

I didn’t see the show, just the commercial for it.

Oh, that’s for real. But it’s not every chimp that can do that. That chimp is Kanzi, and he’s something of a savant in the chimp world. He also cooks omelets. Seriously. He’ll order the ingredients by using a specially made lexigram, and then he prefers to cook it himself.

well could be, but I’m still skeptical of how much Kanzi does and how much the human does. The video I saw was so obviously faked and edited together that it backfired and convinced me that any claims would need to be viewed with suspicion. the Wiki article you link doesn’t provide distinct proof that Kanzi actually does: arrange sticks together in a meaningful way, strike a match, light the sticks where they maintain a fire, add sticks to a fire in such a way that it is maintained, put marshmallows on a stick, place them over a fire until toasted, then eat those same marshmallows. all without human intervention

While it could be true I would need to see more evidence.

Hey, it looks bad until you find out that the chimp did the editing. AND synced all the sound in post.

Holy Crap!!! That’s amazing!

This is the video I saw

It looks like he does put the marshmallow on the stick and I’m sure there is lots going on here that shows he is superbly talented and gifted. But there are enough cuts and differences from one scene to the next that I’m uncomfortable with the implication that he does everything by himself.

This part gives me the willies:

It’s only a matter of time before the Planet of the Apes becomes reality.

Seriously, I’m glad this article is probably woo. I notice it didn’t say how the chimps start their fires, whether they rub two sticks together or bang two rocks together or what. It didn’t even say whether they come across natural fires that are burning and use those for a source. If it were true, you’d think they’d mention details like those.
