I didn’t have a book for Peter Morwood to sign at the convention, and he graciously gave me his address in Ireland and said if I would send a bookplate (or similar) that he would sign it and return it. He recommended against sending any valuable books through the mail–I got the impression that the mail service wasn’t that reliable where he lives.
But I wonder: is a pasted-in autograph really worth anything in the great world of rare book collecting?
The rule of thumb: as long as the plate was not affixed in a way that actually hurts the condition of the book (e.g., pasted in sloppily) then the basic value = value of book + value of separate autographed book plate. There is no “synergy” that increases the overall value. I have a bookplate signed by Harper Lee laid into my copy of To Kill a Mockingbird (i.e., NOT pasted - I don’t want to risk the condition of the book); my combo is not worth the same as a truly signed copy of TKaM…
