Book ('Mad about the 70's') shows Mad magazine repeats its old stuff too much

The OP needs Totally Mad or Absolutely Mad.

I understand that. My point is that the book identifies itself as a collection of Mad magazine articles from the seventies. And that’s what it contains.

If you want new Mad magazine articles, you buy the current issue of the magazine.

I wish I had all my spy vs spy books…

And I my Don Martin collections.
mmm

I think the current version of the magazine is issued 4 times a year. I had to go to Barnes & Noble to find it, and I didn’t know who or what they were satirizing in the most current issue. I recognized a couple of the names, but that was it. Mad Magazine is a thing of the past for me, I think - the collections from the 60’s etc. are of nostalgic value, though.

But did it still have an Al Jaffee Fold-In?

Mad’s books weer cleverly titled and illustrated and written. Specially “Supermad”. They had Alfred E. dressed as the Man of Steel swarmed by pretty girls and the writer made joke puns like “Our planet daily” and “men of steal”.

I just did not want so very, very much rehash in too many forms (books, super specials).

Since they seem to sell, I guess your best option is to buy something else.

I believe they did a whole book of fold-ins once.

Probably. They are the financially most successful humor magazine of all.

[/dp/0446912123"]Mad: fold This Book! A Ridiculous Collection of Fold-Ins](https://www.amazon.com/Mad-Fold-Ridiculous-Collection-Fold-Ins) has 350 fold-ins to play with.

Oh that’s it. I remember a book they put around 1981 and it had some fold-ins in it and one neat sequence about a wimpy man who dreamed of a monster and the dream suddenly ended and the monster sat up and said something like “Whew–what a nightmare!”.

That’s nice.

Step up to mormonism.

I hear He’s going to release JC-Live! soon.

Holy crap! Al Jaffee is still alive and kicking it at 97, and still does the MAD fold-ins, I never would have guessed. His wiki says that he draws them beforehand and doesn’t see the post-fold picture till after that issue is published. I was a big fan of the magazine when I was in middle and high school and bought one of the books that was mainly a tribute to William Gaines. The story about him sneaking into the arm of the Statue of Liberty at night during a period where is was closed off to the public and then proceeding to get stuck because of his ample weight was pretty hilarious.

Try The Bible Unplugged. It’s got a whole different vibe done acoustically.

Maybe a Bible of fold-ins would be fun? I could see a cool Noah’s Ark one and the parable of the fishes and loaves could be worked into a good one.

Every issue announced the cost of the magazine as, “Our Price (35¢) - Cheap!”

After a while, they started crossing out “Cheap” and adding graffiti-ed comments on the price, alluding to the cover topic.

E.g., when they did the “Bonnie and Clyde” satire (“Balmy and Clod”), the graffiti was “Highway robbery!”
