Book. The book concerned the discovery of ‘slow glass’. Glass with the specific property of slowing the transmission of light. SciFi, of course.

Movie. A ‘journey to Mars’ movie. The only scene I can really remember concerned the characters leaving trail markers of helium balloons.

This sounds vaguely familiar. Perhaps Cat’s Cradle by Vonnegut? I don’t have the book handy so I can’t check.
