I didn’t get the ending to The Spoils of Poynton the first time I read it. On further reflection, I understood what was happening, but it still was a real twist. I was only about 13 when I read it, which explains why I was so dense. I don’t know if I would have been less surprised if I’d read it when I was older, though.
Every bloody thing written by Michael Faber ends right when it’s getting to the good part! He is chronic.
