“Breaking the sound barrier” continued the announcer.
Yeah, right. I didn’t hear nuthin". Big Fibber!
Does tv have a sonic boom filter, or was he just kidding?
BTW; knock it off with the freakin’ balloons, okay?
Peace,
mangeorge
BTBTW; I love auto racing.
Going supersonic would be prohibited at low altitude. They’ve had supersonic flights over the airshows at Edwards AFB, but the planes were at something like 30,000 feet. However, I’ve seen low-altitude passes at airshows where a jet came just to the edge. In the humid air you could see a cone of vapour around it.
Speaking of supersonic: what did you think of Jim Nabors? What a voice!
He looked so cool, standing up there in his ball cap (worn “backwards” according to modern style) and all.
And yes, the guy sounds good!
Strongly suspect that a flight of four F-18s going supersonic at low level on a car race flyby would have caused epic destruction…like blowing out windows all along the flight path. Would also likely get the pilots involved in big trouble. I’d guess the announcer misspoke.
Out of curiosity, was it just a straight flyby, or did they do the “Missing Man” formation, where the #3 jet breaks off towards the sun, in memory of fallen comrades?
Straight, iirc.
Anyone notice the race is in Indiana but the flight crews were out of Nevada? So do air bases kinda “compete” which one on training exercises get picked to do flybys for events?
I wonder which base gets the nod for the Charlotte 600 later today?
A couple of our F-18 pilots were recently grounded after flying too low at a flyover. I’m guessing the flyover climate right now is very conservative and by-the-numbers.
Permanently grounded. That’s harsh. But with so many people wanting to fly, and so few slots available, I’d expect pilots to be especially wary of infractions.
Too bad that Admiral wasn’t in Top Gun, We would have been spared the last 80 minutes of bullshit and possibly the rest of Tom Cruise’s dreck.
Never watched the whole movie, but I did wonder what real military pilots thought of it. Pilots I’ve seen in top gun documentaries on PBS didn’t seem much like those in the movie. They all had ugly wimmens. &
Not true. I haven’t had my meds yet.
I was at an Oregon State football game when 2 F-15’s flew over the stadium very low. The pilots were OSU grads. I’m sure they weren’t supersonic but they lit up the afterburners right over the stadium and it made a hell of a roar.
The loudest jet I’ve heard was when I was standing on the flight deck of a carrier (I think it was the John F. Kennedy) and a B1 Lancer did a low flyover. The roar was like a physical force pressing me down into the flight deck. Amazing.
What… are you guys time travellers or something… the race wasn’t even televised until 8pm.
Oh, you all don’t live in the only tv market that doesn’t show the race live like I do?
Anyway, I saw the flyover not once, but about a dozen times. My kids were playing in a soccer tournament and we were under their holding pattern. They kept getting lower and faster with each pass. Finally, they went straight over our field at low level and full speed and believe me it was “booming” (not sonic buy engine wise).
Then, we got one more pass on their way home.
I was in the USAF flying F-16s when Top Gun came out. A half-dozen of us went to see it with our wimmens. We went to one of the last surviving drive ins and nearly had the place to ourselves.
Good thing, cuz we’da been throwed out of anyplace else. The movie sucked pond sum so bad we were hearling beer cans at the screen 200 yards away after just a few minutes. The flying was bad and the BS dialog & plot was worse.
But our wimmens really liked the parts with teh chix. Except when they overheard us sayin’ how much hotter the movie chix were versus ours. They also thought Tom Cruise was hawt, hawt hawt!. We thought he was a wimp l00zer.
All in all, a memorable evening even 23 (!) years later. But the movie is still utter dreck.
Here’s a little clip from that documentary. That’s about as exciting as the film got. There was a lot of classroom training too. But it was very interesting.
It’s probably familiar to you, though I’m sure your F-16s were a lot cooler than what those Navy guys were flying.
Did you happen to see the doc?
