Borgen

Anyone else know what this TV series is?

It’s very damned good.

No clue. Can you share any details?

Well, it is “Negro B” spelled backwards, but that may not be a plot point.

Funny you should mention the show now, Leaffan. My sister loves the show, praised it to the skies and just recently lent me the DVDs and we’ve been watching them. Just two episodes in, but it’s good stuff - kind of like a Danish West Wing with more profanity and sex.
The lead actress, Sidse Babett Knudsen, is very good, and had a big role in the recent HBO Westworld remake.

Yes! That’s exactly what it is. It is very well done. Who knew they had political crises in Denmark?

I’ve heard good things about this show and want to watch it, but I’m waiting for it to be available as part of one of the subscription services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.).

I loved this show. It was so fascinating to watch a political drama set in a country that’s not a major world power.

Great show. I watched it as it was released in the UK.
It’ll make you wish we had a parliamentary system here in the US.

It’s a very, very good show. I like the realism.

Do we have any Danes here?

Saw it about three years ago. Loved S1. S2 was okay.

Giant Borgen fan.

I have all 3 seasons on DVD.

Hmm… dunno about that. The PM has to spend so much time building coalitions and wooing - or threatening - political allies, I’m not sure it would be an improvement.
I see from Wiki that no Danish party has had an outright majority in the Folketing (unicameral legislature) since 1901!

That is a feature, not a bug.

In Spain we literally had to repeat a General Election and then spend 10 months of political bickering because parties could just never reach a consensus. That’s practically a worst case scenario with a parliamentary system.

And you know what? Nothing happened. The world kept going. I still wouldn’t change this for an all-or-nothing Presidential system. Precisely because silly stuff like this happening forced parties to clean up their act more than forty years of two clear main parties alternating power with more or less clear majorities.

I’m fascinated by the nuances in Parliamentary elections, particularly in times of potential significant shifts in the social consensus. There are just so may possibilities and, via tactical voting, the public can respond to very specific politicians, policies, and circs.

I love how the UK public delivered a minority gov after the financial crisis, I love how they did that again for the Brexit negotiations; they basically don’t trust the whole bunch of them but at least one party can’t fuck up the country alone.

In more certain times - and in more confident mood - they will again deliver majority leadership but only if, in their judgement, the policies and leaders are up to it.

I’m constantly amazed - and that dates back to 1945 and Clem Atlee’s trouncing of Winston Churchill.

I gave up waiting and bumped up the Netflix DVD plan for this. Four episodes in and I’m impressed so far. The political shenanigans are very satisfying. Strong performances and a good balance between moving the story forward and exposition. It does remind me of the West Wing but I think it is closer to the stronger story arc structure seen in other shows.

I’m watching the British House of Commons debate the Queen’s Speech on C-SPAN, and it sure makes me wish we had Question Time in the US. IIRC John McCain actually suggested this when he ran for President.
