I miss Dick Radatz.
Which miscue was that? Dom DiMaggio was hurt, Leon Culberson was playing in his place, and his throw to the cut off man Pesky was a huge lollypop of a thing, allowing Enos Slaughter several important full speed strides around the basepaths. By the time Pesky saw him headed for home, (A good throw from the outfield would have held him at third, as it was he was past third and still running when Pesky looked for him at third) he would have needed Perdo’s arm to get the ball there on time. “Pesky held the ball” was a mantra that came about in the following years, yet by all accounts from those present at the time, it was undeserved.
Come to a North Shore Spirit game in Lynn next season. Da Monsta is their pitching coach.
No drag bunts forcing injured Shilling to cover 1st… Cardinals error.
I knew somebody would complain. It’s not so about ''all accounts by those present at the time" - according to Pesky himself, Arch McDonald, who was announcing the game, said he held on to the ball too long. Pesky says he didn’t, but according to Dan Shaughnessy in Curse of the Bambino, film footage shows Pesky hesitated slightly. I haven’t seen the footage myself, so I can’t say. But yeah, others were at fault too, and even perfect play by Pesky might not have gotten Slaughter.
I agree that Pesky doesn’t deserve the goat’s horns. The goat, whether Merkle, Snodgrass, Pesky, or Buckner, rarely has. But the fact is, deservedly or not Pesky has the reputation as the goat of that Series. I’m not sure what message the Sox were trying to send by bringing him in, but if they do end up losing the Series do to an error, it’s sure to seen as a part of the continuing jinx.
Pesky is still a member of the Red Sox family, and was in the dugout most of this season until MLB made him leave because he’s not a player or coach. He’s greatly beloved by the Red Sox Nation and has been active in the organization for over 60 years. Of course they were going to have him there.
I don’t think I can watch the first Busch Stadium game. Fenway puts certain constraints on all away teams, and tends to mute Bawstin’s defensive deficits. Add to that no designated hitters in N.L. parks, and unless the BoSox clean up their fielding act, their offense probably won’t be able to pick up the slack.

Pokey would’ve had it.
Heh. Even my mom, who’s not a sports person, said that first error (where the catcher and third baseman couldn’t decide who was going to catch the ball) looked like something straight out of little league.
hey all i want to say is that if they can make these kinds of errors and still wins, that’s one kick-ass team
But even with the Little League fielding…
I’m gonna go out on a limb here, and say: Boston in 5. They lose tonight, then win two in St. Louis to triumph.
(Either that, or they win the first three, and the Cardinals pull of a “Red Sox comeback” to win in seven. Irony tends to be painful!)
AUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!
Thanks so much for reminding this Orioles fan and Steve Finley fan of that wonderful trade.
