The first one was Sheb Wooley, best remembered for his novelty record The Flying Purple People Eater, but who also appeared in a number of Westerns. In one of them he played a character named Wilhelm who was shot and fell off his horse. The utterance he made, now known as the Wilhelm Scream, is a staple of the movie industry and has appeared in hundred of films.
