Knew you were a Pterry fan. Right on Greebo; for the rest, the murderer (who I believe was profiled by Norman Mailer) was Gary Gilmore; the monk I had in mind, who wrote about Arthur, was Gildas. I would also have accepted Geoffrey of Monmouth, whose Chronicles of the Kings of Britain is the major medieval source of Arthur lore.

Honestly, EH, I got this because of you. I was thinking about comic book artists, when your IQ about Garry Trudeau made me realize that DLR’s answers also applied to comic *strip *writers as well. From there it was a short jump to the other famous Gary in comics.
