Geographically it looks we’ve eliminated everywhere except the Americas, with the exception of the United States. For Canada, maybe a hockey player. South of the border, maybe baseball or soccer.
Only one who comes to mind is Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers, but Fernando-mania hit when I was in high school, so not before 1980.
