Theodore Sorensen wrote that he and JFK were talking upstairs in the White House early in 1961 when a concealed phone rang. It was hidden behind a wall panel; they didn’t even know it was there before that. The President answered the phone, and a woman asked if she’d reached the Washington, D.C. animal hospital. JFK said no, and the woman at first didn’t believe him. She finally hung up, apparently never realizing who she’d been speaking to.
